If Disney and Marvel could still make good movies or IPs they wouldn't care to sue. they're floundering, and ai is the easy target.

Anyone has the full text of the complaint? I have no idea how the studios can have a case here that they wouldn't have against, say, Photoshop or Google Images. The greyest area is probably the use of copyright material in AI training, but even then they'd need to prove that AI arrived at copyrighted characters from images that were made available to the public by the company itself.

The only way for an ai to learn to make an image of something is to feed it images of whatever it's supposed to make. So to get photorealistic Shrek inflation porn, it's probably loaded up with all the films + official artwork available as well as fan works. That's the big legal factor that's going to decide the future of ai; whether it's considered fair use to use training data without the proper copyright permits. If courts decide it isn't, then 99% of corporate training data is instantly void and they have to start again from stock images.

Although, individuals will still be able to run all their depravity locally by downloading tools and making their own data sets. Either way it goes suits me, personally.

You can draw characters all you want, but the moment you try to sell something linked to them is when the lawsuits begin. The vast, vast majority of work that goes into ai development is just stockpiling shit tons of training data, whether its pictures, text, stackoverflow solutions, and a million other things. Without it, ai commercialization is dead in the water
