What is your sincere opinion of my top 4
Also feel free to post your top 4 as well
>>211358702 (OP)>apocalypse nowwhich version?
>>211358702 (OP)i never got the hype behind Rope. what did you like about it?
the rest are all fantastic ofc
>>211358702 (OP)Solid, maybe overrated. Never seen Mashima but the tagline "life in four chapters" sounds interesting, Jap cinema is good at that type of narrative.
>>211358824Didn't see the middle two but outer two are solid.
>>211358769Only seen the theatrical
>>211358824I like how minimalist and gripping it is. It is also my go to rewatch film
>>211358876>overfiend sequelnice
>>211358876Ichi the killer is a kino mongst kinos
The manga is great as well
>>211358882>Jap cinema is good at that type of narrative.it's an American film
>>211358953Nice, save yourself the agony and never watch the other versions
Theres a reason why movies need competent editors that dont let the director throw in every scene they shot just because they shot it
>>211358702 (OP)I prefer many Hitchcocks to Rope but it's still good. Apoc now is best Vietnam movie and I can't fathom how anyone can think otherwise
>>211358882Mishima is American, it's directed by Paul Schrader. it's also amazing

>>211358702 (OP)I dont really have a top 4 in an objective sense. My favourites of the 2000s are pic rel. this is maybe half to 1/3 of all movies I've seen made in the 2000s, so I'd say the 2000s have a pretty good ratio of good to bad, for my taste that is. Children of Men would be my number 1 favourite if I had to choose.
t. zoomer
>>211358702 (OP)I've only seen Apocalypse Now from those 4. Probably my favourite war film from pre 90s. All time it would be tied with FMJ. I've only recently started going through Kubrick's films. Eyes Wide Shut is amazing. The Shining filtered me. I can tell its an amazing movie but It didn't captivate me nearly as much as EWS. Clockwork Orange and 2001 are next on my watch list, not sure which I should watch first.
>>211360719you've seen 50-75 movies made in the 2000's?
>>211361070nta, is that high or low? I've seen 89 made in the 2000s and they make up 8% of the movies I've seen
>>211361070i could be way off on the estimate since I only started keeping track recently on ones I liked. theres also some movies I liked from the 2000s but didnt put on that list because I wouldn't recommend them, so yeah its probably less than half. I dont normally give movies a shot unless theres something that catches my attention. This is obvious in that the majority of my favourites are either history or war related not just in the 2000s but across all decades.
>>211358702 (OP)Bretty good. Haven't seen Mishima yet but I want to watch it
>>211361162Damn when did you start keeping track? All my lists of favourites I'd recommend from pre 90s-2020s totals at 86. 2000s being the most at 25 and the 2020s being the least at 7
how do you generate these squares and posters, or am i just firing up ms paint over here
>>211361301letterboxd.com. you gotta make an account to make lists.
>>211358702 (OP)Those are all good movies, minus Rope which I found boring and predictable. But I wouldn't strap in to watch any of those again anytime soon, they're all too plodding and serious.
>>211361301letterboxd or topsters.org
>>211361325Just saw the Good the Bad and the Ugly. Very kino. as a zoomer I have a strong bias towards 2000/2010 era films but I've recently given some of the big name pre 90 films a shot and none have been a miss so far.
>>211361301My shit grids (
>>211358882) I make in GIMP with screengrabs I find off image search, I think the others are screengrabs off letterbox or other web services people use for their kino organization.
>>211361318oh god, ive watched too many films over a long period of time, i cant be assed inputting everything in there now
>>211361330ill use topsters but the problem is that theres way too much variety, youre comparing apples to beach balls at a certain poiint
>>211361367>I've recently given some of the big name pre 90 films a shotBruh, most of the best films are pre-90s.
>>211361407like i said, i have a strong bias towards the 2000/10s. picrel is everything i've seen pre 90s so far.
>>211361397you can just enter in the absolute best you can think of. you determine what constitutes the list. doesnt have to be everything you've seen.
>>211361539>i have a strong bias towards the 2000/10sSo does everyone about their own childhood.
>>211361397>theres way too much varietyPick one film per genre, or one film per director to narrow it down.
>>211361647Maybe but I don't feel nostalgia towards them if that's what you mean.
>>211358702 (OP)>Generic pretentious shite.
>>211361871So, why are you biased?
>>211361959Exposure, because I probably started with some something like Centurion or Kingdom of Heaven which was under the 'history' category when I still used Netflix as a teen. Ever since I've started pirating and using free streaming sites I mostly use IMDB's 'more like this' section and that normally factors in the time the movie was made. Or I go to an actor's or director's IMDB and see everything else they were in. Watching 2000s movies leads into watching more 2000s movies if you use this method. Familiarity, because I hardly know anyone from before the 90s. (because I myself am not from that time) and I know a lot of actors from the 2000s because I started with those. Maybe this is a form of nostalgia but not the 'i miss the 2000s so i watch movies from that era to remind me of them' type of nostalgia. I'd probably know more actors from the pre 90s if more of them were still alive and still working, but for instance you(assuming you're older) probably learned about Clint Eastwood from one of his older movies but I only discovered him through Gran Torino when he's already a grandpa. Where as I discovered Tom Cruise as a kid because MI3 was my first MI movie.
>>211362282A lot of words just to say you're nostalgic but OK.
>>211362416You asked I answered. Is nostalgia not about feeling good about a past time? That's not the reason for my bias.
>>211358702 (OP)Pretty generic.
>>211358824Pat Garrett is underrated. Other picks are generic.
>>211358876One step above Troma fans. Maybe two.

>>211361325Possibly the most boring choices itt. Not the worst mind you, but still.
>>211361539>picrel is everything i've seen pre 90s so farHuh.
>>211362446Nostalgia can sometimes just be a fondness borne of familiarity.
>>211362689Nothing if you don't really care about movies.
>>211362744Why is it awful? There is objectivity in art but I also think everyone has subjective desires in what they want to see and feel from a movie. That's only my 2000s list mind you, so if you have better 2000s recommendations by all means provide them.
>>211358702 (OP)these are all good but a bit like saying your favorite albums are ITAOTS, some radiohead shit, MBV, and kanye - explore a bit more!!
>>211362647>>letterboxdWhat site are you guys using?
>>211362935>Why is it awful?Because it's a list made up mostly of disposable Hollywood blockbusters. Not that you can't enjoy some of this stuff and still have good taste, but this represents the best of a decade for you? Barf.
>There is objectivity in artYes, I said, awful.
>but I also think everyone has subjective desires in what they want to see and feel from a movie.Your desires resulted in an awful list of movies. Could give a shit about your desires.
>That's only my 2000s list mind you, so if you have better 2000s recommendations by all means provide them.No.
>>211363022ITAOTS is a good music equivalent for Apocalypse Now, because they both suck.
>>211363092I was commenting on general tastes on letterboxd, where people write highfalutin essays to defend their love for boring awful crap. I use rym to log my movies.
>>211363152>ITAOTS is a good music equivalent for Apocalypse Now, because they both suck.ITAOTS is fine - apocalypse now is good
>>211363022if a movie is obscure does it make it better?
>>211363152if you can't provide better films from the 2000s your criticism is worthless. and disposable hollywood blockbusters means nothing. those films could only be made through the sincere effort of a director, writer, producer. actors too. sound design, costume design, set design etc etc etc. regardless of the overarching studio's demands many of those films are heartfelt efforts to create something good and enjoyable. if you dont appreciate the effort put in you dont have to say anything at all.
>Apocalypse Now, because they both suck.you have very particular and contrarian taste then. Apoc Now is an amazing production. The hard work and ridiculous lengths Coppola put into that film really shines through in the finished product.
>>211363295no - there are just more interesting choices - who wants to here that you think four of the most lauded films of all the are the best? not me
>>211363295>if a movie is obscure does it make it better?People with shitty taste always think like this.
>if you can't provide better films from the 2000s your criticism is worthless.I can. I'm not going to.
>and disposable hollywood blockbusters means nothing. It means a little more than nothing. Although not by much. Which is why your list is awful.
>those films could only be made through the sincere effort of a director, writer, producer. actors too. sound design, costume design, set design etc etc etc. regardless of the overarching studio's demands many of those films are heartfelt efforts to create something good and enjoyable.Who cares.
>if you dont appreciate the effort put in you dont have to say anything at all.We gauge movie quality by effort? Even by those standards, those movies ain't much.
>you have very particular and contrarian taste Well duh.
>Apoc Now is an amazing production.I didn't say its production sucked.

>>211358702 (OP)It's a decent one, though Rope makes me think you're a faggot (literally, not figuratively).
My top 3 are so well-defined that picking a fourth is impossible so I just picked the 10/10 movie I watch the most and am most often moved by, which is The Passion.
Honorable mentions for 4 include: Waltz With Bashir, Ivan's Childhood, Grave of the Fireflies, Nacho Libre, Beau Travail, All Quiet On The Western Front (original ofc), Patton, Rumble Fish, The Royal Tanenbaums, Faust, THX 1138, Blade Runner, Metropolis, The Wall, Wings Of Desire, and a ton of other shit I really love.
>>211366703Conspiracy is boring.
>>211358702 (OP)I really like your Apocalypse Now pick. I can watch that movie anytime.
I used to really love Clockwork Orange but it has dropped in my rankings. Still a very good movie.
I haven't seen the 3rd one, but it looks very interesting.
Rope is solid. I get why you like it. It's a tight, short movie and it's great that you're seeing it from the villains perspective.

>>211367870>>211367945It's the only good film there.
>>211368163Dangerously based
>>211358702 (OP)>What is your sincere opinion of my top 4first three normie and unlived 20 something student rope is a bit more personality.
I would say you are a 20 something student/neet normie possibly homosexual and that you were bullied for a long time and it effected you deeply. You are therefore trying to develop a false person who you think will scare bullies but in fact it will have the opposite effect and you may continue getting wedgies as an adult. I'm sorry, I can imagine what happened to you in school must have been awful, kids can be very cruel.

>>211368575It's not just any anime, it's basically the Japanese version of Gone With The Wind as told through a fictionalized and highly stylized romantic interpretation of the lives of the real-life engineers who designed the planes of the Imperial Japanese Air Force.
It's this epic, sweeping, deeply tragic and emotional romantic (both in the literal and the 19th century sense) drama made by Miyazaki of all people, and it's a totally sui generis film that has few comparisons.

>>211368959>Itโs good I find that it's one of those films like Amarcord that's decent on it's own and not amazing or anything but is objectively well-made and had a very positive influence on filmmaking to the point that it has an entire family of films it directly influenced.
It inspired stuff like Shawshank, Papillon, and Escape from Alcatraz, which is a very good legacy (much like how Amarcord directly influenced Radio Days, Only Yesterday, and A Christmas Story).
Personally I prefer Birdman of Alcatraz.
