Why are people starting to look back fondly at this movie after thinking it sucked when it first released?

People really liked the recent broadway musical version with Jeremy Jordan as Gatsby, so it sparked a renewed interest in this adaptation.

It was never that bad and it was never even obvious to me why people hated it. The cast is solid and it's visually appealing and faithful to the book, what's the issue?

I saw it in theaters and loved it. One of the only Hollywood films of the 2010's I can actually say that for. Still watch it every couple years. I get why it's divisive because of the soundtrack choices but I thought it was interesting and liked the Electroswing motif. But I have been a fan of Baz movies since Romeo and Juliet so I knew what I was getting into, and that his style is love it or hate it. Also regardless of the licensed music the score is beautiful. And I thought it told the story very well, really liked all the actors in their roles, and it felt a lot more engaging, emotional and endearing than the 70's adaptation to me. Glad people have come around to it.

because when it released it was still the hipster era of pretending everything needs to be "tasteful" and "restrained" and shitting on masters of spectacle like luhrmann or michael bay. it was always good.

Tobey Maguire was a terrible casting choice for Nick. He's the worst part of this movie.

He doesn't understand the quiet despair of the gilded age. Thinks only the working class was aggrieved. It was during Gatsby junket that BL told David Poland that he can't run away from himself forever!

Because zoomers got to the age where they read Great Gatsby, and zoomers think Dicaprio is a good actor.

It's sort of fun in that it's enjoyable to see the excess and almost comical lavishness of everything, and the early 10s production and direction is somewhat nostalgic at this point
Completely robs the story of any emotional resonance though

I just watched it last night and enjoyed it quite a bit. I like think they used contemporary pop to give modern audiences a sense of the vibe people had back then while partying and dancing the Charleston.
It was a cgi puke fest but almost artfully so. I haven't read the book in years so I'm not sure if they changed much but it felt right

It's only faithful to the book in a paint by numbers "here is the story" way, but completely fails at evoking any of the deeper meaning. You can tell the movie was directed by a faggot, because the story is merely a vehicle used as an excuse to stage a soul-less spectacle of song and dance.

Wrong. Faguizamo ruins every movie he appears in. Jared Leto would have made a better Tybalt.

It's a genuinely great movie until Daisy has a woman moment and changes her mind about leaving Tom.
She doesn't seem to like him much, and it isn't even a secret to her that he's cheating on her. The only one who didn't know was the mechanic Tom was cucking.
