Fast car? You've never heard of the 1955 Chevy 150? It's the car that made the Cannonball Run in 12 miles.

Funny. But there's actually a black hole in Hoboken that will slingshot you to California. The closer you get to the black hole the faster you have be traveling to not get trapped by the gravitational pull. So in this case using a unit of distance to show off a vehicle's speed makes sense, since the shorter the distance the faster your car would need to be able to go.

I felt really weird watching it honestly. It's definitely a masterpiece - the lighting, camera work, sets, costume design, everything technical is amazing. And it's culturally significant for capturing a moment in time - early 1960s before everything went to shit - fast cars, drive-ins, rock and roll, etc. The verisimilitude is there.

It really just feels morbid to me. That world doesn't exist anymore and as a story it just feels unrelatable. Like if nostalgia is bittersweet, this just feels bitter. The characters feel real but they might as well be Russian peasants in the 1600s for all I care.

Yes. Funny how Lucas is known as The Star Wars guy when this also had a huge cultural effect. It inspired Happy Days and it's spinoffs which really started the careers of Ron Howard, Henry Wrinkler, Penny Marshall, Robin Williams, Scott Baio. Also probably inspired Grease. If this was all Lucas did he would still be considered a success.
