Science fiction is being eradicated in the west.

Why?

Years ago, China conducted a study on what were the factors that contributed to a person becoming an Engineer. Among them, liking science fiction was a very high commonality. The cause being that those kids got into engineering because they wanted to make the cool sci-fi stuff of their childhood for real. China then decided to bankroll Sci-fi authors for party approved science fiction stories, and still does today.

Meanwhile, every single long standing Sci-fi franchise of western origin has been torn down, pissed on and left to die.

Star Wars, Star Trek, Doctor Who...

i know there's always been pulp stuff, but i took it for granted a lot of sf writers had a background in science. at the very least, they were good writers.

then i took it for granted the TV writers were at least into science fiction novels. if you're writing Star Trek or Doctor Who, what are you going to be reading? probably Isaac Aasimov and stuff.

nowadays i think Star Trek watchers just go on to be Star Trek writers. that is all there is to it. big, bombastic Doctor Who with kweer themes? well, that's what it's like, isn't it?

Nu sci fi autors are more interested in regurgitating other media and STEM zoomers are more interested in being codemonkeys nowadays.

might as well have not done one at all and just gone off hearsay, because that's pretty much what it is. they observe what they want to see and report what they want to hear

Yeah somewhere in the 2000s sci fi just lost its cultural relevance. We still get them, like Dune for example, but they come and go quick and easy. They don't shift the zeitgeist like older sci fi did. Fantasy on the other hand is back in full gear after a slump in 90s thanks to stuff like LotR and GoT.

TNG technical manual says you're a clown.

Also, I read it cover to cover first time I got my hands on it and I'm an engineer.

Gunsmith Cats is pretty great, one of the only weeb cartoons that I enjoyed. On to the point
>Science fiction is being eradicated in the west.
Not to make excuses for the chicoms ruining everything as they like to do, but I'd argue sci-fi was already dying from lack of imagination. The genre came into being as pseduo-magical crazy stories from the 1930s pulps and into the 60s, and it really revolved around imagination more than anything. At some point you had a shift to extremely serious, deep movies that had at least a major attempt at realism ingrained into it.

Basically sci-fi was already dying because it traded imaginative fantasia for boring realism.

Wut. Fantasy is about as dead as scifi, if not more so. The last decent fantasy I can think of is His Dark Materials and even that was just okay.
