Childhood memories often have a supernatural quality to them. The past is ultimately a ghost

The duality of love and hatred, same as all of Bergman's films

It was just a missed opportunity imo. It had so much beauty and inspiration behind it, because Bergman was a very talented director, but then he just had to ruin the movie with his neurotic fears and have an obvious projection of his own father onto the priest character and vilify him and even go to the extent of burning him alive and creating a fantasy land where he has a 'real family' and then Jews being good and magical and cool and it was just a mess by the end. Bergman could never write a story. He should have gotten others to do that. You think you're getting comfy childhood kino, but nope, Bergman does it every time, he tricks you and suddenly makes the movie about as much disgusting and pathetic subject matter as he can fit in.

All I remember from the movie was the maid with the big fat titties, the guy who put a candle out with his farts and the Hebrew who kidnapped the kids by some Houdini trunk trick. Oh and the kids widowed mother married some Lutheran priest that turned out to be some psycho cause Christianity bad mmmkay?

It wasn't a trick, it was actually magic. Don't ask Bergman how, or why, or what the purpose of it was in the movie, Jews have cool secret magic that they use sometimes and goys have a stupid religion that makes life miserable.

Widow married a rich man who she thinks will elevate her and her kids to upper middle class status and give her kids a bright future... But he's evil jncarnare, basically tortures her kids and tells them repeatedly that he doesn't love them and only cares about them in the abstract of literal hostages to force their mom to be trapped in a hellish marriage where he treats her like a literal slave since the court system at the time automatically gave custody of kids to their dad.

The kids eventually use Jewish magic to murder their evil stepfather to free themselves and their mom but the final scene show that the son at least, will be forever haunted by the memories of the abuse he suffered.
