Much as I love the film, Cary Grant engages me less than Jimmy Stewart. He's such a leading man; I prefer when more of an everyman type gets tangled in one of Hitchcock's nightmares.
Rope is another one that shot up in prestige. Jimmy Stewart's role as a cynic (a first for him) used to be polarizing, but now people praise it for breaking the mold. It's interesting how tastes change.
