I think history will be kind to his filmography, he really hasn't made a bad movie yet. This was better than his last two, though. I don't think every director needs to be a chameleon. Tarantino's stuck with his style too and it's still working for him

His style IS evolving, it's getting more snd more extreme. Phoenician Scheme is actually kind of a step back, being pretty straightforward.
But Asteroid City went full on meta with the theatre production / dollhouse thing and even more extreme were the Roald Dahl shorts.

I'd say the opposite, what you're saying is literally the most common reddit complaint about his work, literally everyone says this, and if he gave a shit what anybody thought then he'd prove he could direct something restrained and basic just to shut you up. Instead he doubles and quadruples down just to spit on the critics.
