Why isn't there more kino set around the time of the Mexican-American war? I'm not really a horror fan but this is still the best example I can think of

I live very close to where the Donner Party, who inspired this movie, ate each other. They did a great job of capturing the Sierras in the winter

I think it's also just live in dense forests. Going /innawoods/ does have a psychological effect. Also the natives themselves centuries before European contact had entire no-go zones of wilderness in the west that they just knew was cursed somehow. For example they wouldn't even hunt around Mount Shasta and believed some ancient alien race lived in the caves in the mountain
