Fun fact: there's a good chance that this twist ending parody was based on an old theory about there being three killers in the original Scream, with Dewey changing his mind about the whole thing after he fell in love with Gail. In the first killing the boyfriend looks towards both sides of the patio door, as if he's looking at two killers standing on each side. Then when the girl runs out the front door there's a killer there as well. This caused people to question if there was a third killer.

As the theory went Dewey would have become the hero cop in their original plan, becoming famous just like the other two and finally get the respect and pussy that he became a cop for. In the sequels this would also explain why Dewey's "nerve damage" limp switches sides between 2 and 3. Because he was faking it to get more sympathy from Gail and stopped doing it when she wasn't around, then had to start doing it again and messed up.
