For a start they didn't find it, and even if they had, it wouldn't have been a viable passage, it wasn't traversed by a ship until 1906 and that took 2 years. It wasn't sailed within a single season until 1944 when Henry Larsen managed it in 86 days (this was on his return journey, the outward journey time took him 2 years too).

To properly get through it really requires a modern icebreaker, or luck.
