I've never seen it. Is it just a DnD cash grab?

It’s more of a satanic panic flick about dnd
>schizo kid goes to college
>meets new friends
>plays dnd (here called mazes and monsters)
>goes even more schizo and thinks it’s real
>wanders New York thinking he’s on a quest
In a remake I’d play up the fantasy aspects more where the audience won’t know what’s real and what’s in his imagination

>the movie is actually more about crummy parents not caring about their kids in the first place

If that was considered satanic wonder what they thought about actual DND with children from 1983. Or for that matter Neverending Story or Labrinyth and Willow an moar :@

DnD is the most boring and mainstream tabletop game ever. Every normie I know talks about it, mainly 5 edition slop. Literally, Marvel tier. Normies pretending to be nerds.

DnD deserves to be shamed away.

There are plenty of things which "started them all", but not a lot of them became popular among normies, because normies only consume slop and not every thing is a slop. Modern DnD is a comic book movie level slop, with strong Black transwomen and world ending Tanos plots. Pathfinder goes there too.

Sure but everyone on /tg/ has been complaining about it since 3.5e and if Chainmail were in its place you'd be bitching about that instead while being shocked that whichever company owned that did a gay wotc job of it too
All of the main alternatives have been just as pozzed or were pozzed from their very conception anyways.
If Storyteller system was the big thing it would be the same problems and complaints.
Your problem is the existence of a main thing to begin with and that will never go away because of the nature of communication

The most unhinged - Jack Chick's and Barbara Pulling's - moral panics were not even about D&D making people crazy or it ruining morals or such. Chick and Pulling thought that magic is real and accessible, and they were genuinely spooked about portrayals of magic in popular culture encouraging people to use real magic. Jack Chick also campaigned against Lord of the Rings (both the books and the movies).
In case of Jack Chick he also was an anti.-catholic schizo so he spent most of his prottie activism in trying to convince people of Catholicism's satanic origins, and Barbara Pulling ultimately chose to die on the hill of insisting that Necronomicon is a real grimoire that is being distributed to teenagers by witches.

As if DND didn't have world ending superbosses? Strahd exists, Lord Soth exists, Vecna too. Dunno if Lolth would count since never seen :3 all made in 1970s

Then they should have focused on morals and policies instead of hyperfocusing on being hysterical about nerds throwing dice to see how much damage a fireball does to goblins. How did they expect to not be laughed at?

The dead brother trauma angle mostly saves it from being that though. They make it pretty explicit he was more than just impressionable if not actively looking for escape from reality.
