Its actually pretty simple. The second season actually peaked with the episode where Pascal died.
Audiences like Pascal as Joel and dont really like Bella as Ellie. The story and the characters aren't compelling enough without him carrying the show

The first season was kinda ass, except for father-daughter banter between Joel and Ellie. I knew they'll kill Joel, so I didn't come back for season 2, I knew there'll be nothing good left.
