like right after the book got popular he walked it back and said that the events themselves were fictional but the people and the timeline was real based on his research
within 5 years of the book coming out multiple historians confirmed the entire timeline was also made up
so the entire book was fictional from top to bottom but still got made into a miniseries purporting to be real, and the author died rich and basically unrepentant for lying
