One thing it's good for is that if you learn at some unspecified date in the future that you have shot something "problematic", you can just go back and change it.
Incidentally, this also allows you to change a lot of things for different regions, in order to account for differing cultural sensibilities.
Overall, it just permits and encourages inoffensive and soulless art.

its actually more expensive. the goal is to give the production companies (owned by the same people who own the studios) as much money as possible so there is no profit left for the studio to be taxed or pay residuals.

He might have needed to fire it. There are all kinds of regulations about where you can do things like that in filming. It might have cut through all kinds of restrictions and licenses to simple CG the gun and him shooting it instead of doing it for real. They could have filmed it anywhere compared to the restrictive areas using even a prop gun would have entailed

I have heard with these kinds of films that they will start shooting without a finished script most of the time, so then you can have a scene like this where you know SLJ has to dump some exposition but you don't know yet exactly where or what context he'll be dumping the exposition in. In this way with green screening everything you could insert him sitting down in an apartment or in a spaceship depending on where you want the dump to take place when you decide in post, etc.
