It came out before evangelion did, dove into much deeper themes than it and its obvious it influenced eva unit 01 and some dynamic poses it did.
Everybody likes to pretend the west doesnt influence the east, but it does and comes vice versa.

Comic's first 20 volumes are 10/10. After the timeskip it remains great for the most part and the ending is kino, but it's just not the same anymore. The MTV adaptation won, even if the ending is kinda eh.

I had no idea what this was until this thread. Big networks in the 90s sure did like to fund some offbeat ideas like this. It's very weird even just reading about the premise.

It's crazy how avant-garde this show is for animation and barely anyone brings it up compared to EVA, probably cause it was lower budget. It was actually more creative than Evangelion when it came to psychological drama/horror, since the art style was constantly changing to portray Julie's mental state.

Anno unironically ripped off Episode 12 when he did Asuka's mental breakdown in the middle of the show.

Show adapts only the first 11 volumes of the comic. There are 35 in total: first arc are the first 20 vols, then there's a timeskip which starts the second arc in vol 21 until the series' finale.

Yeah do this. The cartoon it's a great intro for the comic, but if you rewatch it after reading it you'll appreciate it even more, probably the best adaptation from a comic I've watched.
