It's manipulated, but it's not fake, not completely. Probably like 70% real, 30% fake. There are tons and tons of testimonies from people who have appeared on the show, you can easily find behind the scenes info. Long story short is, they are real people, they are not in on the joke for the most part, and their reactions are real. But, a lot of stuff is edited out of sequence to appear differently than in reality, or falsely represented in voiceovers.

The first season is hilarious, laugh out loud funny. But I agree over time he became less funny and more ..interesting. Pretty much every subsequent season and project since NFY season 1 has gotten less laughs from me, but is still thought provoking.
