I normally hate the โ€œit was just a dream broโ€ interpretations of films but itโ€™s very difficult to read this one any other way.

Agreed, with some slow parts. Why did Sergio Leone choose to tell a story about a Yiddish gang though?

I felt very mixed on it when I watched a few months ago but I canโ€™t stop thinking about. A very layered ambitious film with lots of memorable stuff. Definitely gonna end up watching the extended version at some point.
Seems like the type of movie that will get better as you age and realise youโ€™re a crusty grey-haired drug-addicted rapist like Noodles

I guess there were enough movies about Italians doing crime, made sense to branch out. I think he happened to really like the book it was based on.

This is the least charismatic De Niro has ever been. He was a wet, raping sponge. Somehow it still worked.

The 1910s parts with the street kids was my favorite part. They could have done a full four hour movie exploring growing up in such a messed up world. The movie was still good but I think it lost a little when it became Robert De Niro wandering around looking withdrawn or nostalgic.

it makes sense, considering Leone's protagonists are mostly silent taciturn characters playing off loud and larger-than-life side characters
it is a very interesting departure from his usual cheeky wiseguy characters

Warms my heart that OUATIA threads get traction nowadays. Must have been the fact it was free for pajeets to watch on Youtube for the past year. Unfortunately it would need to be torrented now unless you're an American with Paramount+
