I'm going to talk about KRULL for the next two hours.
>>211431520 (OP)Krull eh?
Not the most practical weapon.
Don't let the screenshot fool you, this is NOT Star Wars and that is NOT Tatooine being approached by a star destroyer.
Thread theme to get you pumped up: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tKtLjztXhhA
James Horner's score for Krull is one of the three things that makes this film enjoyable and rewatchable. You can hear some inspiration from Gustav Holst's The Planets in there from time to time.
The second of the three best things about Krull is the practice effects, specifically the models and, as I'll mention later, the creature design.
>>211431592I mean it's crappy until you activate it's flying kill-drone mode. Then it's pretty neat.
>>211431520 (OP)My favorite thing about Krull is seeing super early Liam Neeson and Robbie Coltraine. But godspeed OP. You talk about it as much as you like for the next two hours.
We (the audience) didn't have the LOTR films back then, so to sate our appetites we were given The Black Fortress, a formidable and ominous structure, the perfect eeeeeevil lair.
Here is but a glimpse at the amazing creature design going on in this film, the slayers, the zerg which rush from the Black Fortress to conquer the world.
>>211431520 (OP)https://youtu.be/W4RwKFvWs3g?si=WdETovQwJparCul2&t=86
Facing off against these evil creatures were...the good guys. They probably have some kind of name, but nothing memorable like "the riders of Rohan" or anything like that. Look at this dude, he's dressed like third rate Iron Man (and that's a good thing, by the way).
Here is a closer shot of Lyssa, played by the beautiful Lysette Anthony, a princess who's about to have passionate sweaty FIERY wedding night sex with her suitor, Colwyn. Lysette Anthony, a British actress, was dubbed by the way, by an American actress, because American audiences at the time couldn't handle the fucking bants.
Here's Colwyn, might as well be called Chadwyn, look at that jawline. Ken Marshall would later go on to star in movies and tv shows where he slowly loses that nice head of hair (RIP).
Peter Yates directed the fuck out of this. Excellent cinematography throughout for a goofy Star Wars ripoff. Excellent lighting.
>I give fire to water. It will not return except from the hand of the woman I choose as my wife.
>I take fire from water. I give it only to the man whom I choose as my husband. Take the fire from my hand.
Fun fact: Krull was the first and only film to show a wedding ceremony that involves the groom quenching a torch in a koi pond and the bride grabbing that flame from the koi pond to hand back to her groom.
Unfortunately for our couple, the slayers bust in and fuck shit up real quick. These aliens in trousers carry spikey swords that shoot laser beams while the Iron Man guys only have swords. You could asy the good guys are outgunned. Literally.
The creature design for the slayers is really neet. Creepy as hell. Like alien knights. Bust those domes open and a large gooey lobster pours out of their skull and swandives into the ground. Cool stuff.
After the slayers bust up the wedding and abscond with the beautiful bride and shoot Colwyn down some steps, we finally meet Ynyr, our Obi-Wan Kenobi slash Gandalf character played by Freddie Jones, father of Toby Jones, and that guy from Dune with the bushy eyebrows.
Here, he's the guy with the regular eyebrows (but a mutton chop goatee).
I know this line by heart:
>"Fame? Naw, that's an empty purse. Spend it, go broke. Eat it, go hungry. Seek it? Go mad!"
>>211431520 (OP)Is this the movie with the cyclops guy? I always remember seeing it on HBO as a kid but never remembering/knowing the whole movie. I barely remember it
Taking a moment to appreciate Chadwyn's pants.
>>211432676>barely remember itThat means it's time for a prequel KRULL film about the Cyclopses.
>>211432727it was so long ago, like early 90s. I just remember the stupid spaghetti throwing star, and a cyclops guy and that was it
This Horner score doesn't let up. You could make a nature documentary or sequel to Samsara or Koyaanisqatsi with this score.
>>211431520 (OP)Based OP. The shots inside the black fortress were so cool and far out.
Colwyn sticks his hand into molten lava to retrieve the ancient throwing weapon, the Glaive. What I like about this is that clearly Colwyn, and Lyssa, are some kind of wizard who is both immune to heat and fire and can also control it to some degree. The movie doesn't beat you over the head with lore or explanations, it just presents these facts through unaddressed character actions. You couldn't have these scenes today without some clunky line about it to keep audiences from getting confused. They trusted audiences back then.
Don't lose momentum.
Krull is kineaux.
They didn't explain the Glaive either. It was just an ancient weapon, super powerful, chillin in some lava flow up in the mountain. No voiceover from Colwyn as he scaled the rocks to get it explaining who put it there, how to use it, what it even does. Everything they need to say about this weapon, and everything you need to know, is captured right here in this shot.
Okay, maybe it's captured in this shot actually. It's got blades on it. The throwing ability is implied. Dude doesn't even train with this weapon ONCE throughout the entire runtime. He just KNOWS how to wield it. Did I mention he can manipulate fire and is impervious to high temperatures? These slayer aliens didn't know who they was fuckin wit, but they bout to find out.
Meanwhile, Lyssa is hanging out at the Black Fortress being courted by a yet-unseen king badass. Everything in the fortress is strange and creepy and we get some nice shots like this to demonstrate the otherwordliness.
I was going to watch Thunderball tonight but I guess I'll watch Krull instead.
Thanks, OP.
Finally, this brings me to the third of the three best things about this movie: the set design. This is a set. There are many like it, but this is one is this scene's. Look at that shit. Imagine getting to work on that. You grow up as a British theater (sorry, theatre) kid and chase hot trim while working on low grade Shakespeare sets and one day you're call to work on something like this.
By the way, this is Ergo the Manificent: short in stature, tall in power, narrow of purpose, and wide of vision (and he does not travel with peasants and beggars). He's the film's magic guy, less Gandalf and more that wizard from Willow. He turns himself into a goose. Based David Battley.
We also catch our first glimpse of Rell the cyclops. He scares the shit out of Ergo, but I'm willing to bet he's got a heart of gold under there.
I miss models so much bros. These CGI shitfests we get now are completely devoid of weight and soul. We didn't know how good we had it. Hell, the country was at war, but that didn't matter. They said we're going to give the people kino, and kino they gave us. God bless em.
Chadwyn runs into a group of bandits who he quickly recruits. Liam Neeson as Kegan (short on quid, tall of stature, dry of piss, and wetter of panties), Robbie "I guess I'm just Hagrid forever now" Coltrane as Rhun, and Alun Armstrong as their leader Torquil (cool name btw).
Look at these sets. Great sets.
I'll be honest, the movie drags a bit during any of the scenes that aren't rife with that sexy Horner score. This is very much a 'the music is a character' type piece of art much like the first season of White Lotus. When it's not around you miss it.
Here we meet the Seer and his uh...boy. There's a cool green motif with this guy that stands out from the browns, reds, and grays that dominate the rest of the film.
Now I love the LOTR films, I do, but there's a simplicity to Krull's presentation of magical scenes like this that I appreciate.
The midpoint battle is a cool little showdown in the swamp. Another great set btw. Not as striking as the shot of the swamp in Fury Road, but adequate, adequate.
I feel a kinship with this guy.
52 minutes into the movie and we're finally checking in with the princess. What's that Japanese word for women who play hard to get?
I had this movie on VHS as a kid. I was scared shitless of it, it was too much. The weapon is engraved in my brain. Keep going please.
one of my favorite movies
With Paul Giamatti as the changeling.
Need me an Ergo puppy sometimes.
Liam Neeson's been pimpin since been pimpin since been pimpin since his first role. Respect.
>>211431520 (OP)LOVE IS FLEETING; POWER IS ETERNAL
The Beast had it right.
>>211434592This part was really creepy
I didn't realize how little we get of these amazing shots inside the Black Fortress. I wish we got more of Lyssa's journey inside that nightmare world.
Finally a partial Beast reveal at 1 hour 9 minutes in. And this great line
>>211435035. The Beast is one of the best creature designs of all time, hidden within this forgotten 1983 Star Wars ripoff cult classic.
>>211433169>>211433240People fixate too much on the Glaive being a completely impractical weapon and ignore the fact that you have to be a man of destiny to even acquire the thing. Yes, the average person probably just slices their hand to shreds trying to use the thing but that's why the average person doesn't even get to wield it. It's a king's weapon, plebs need not apply
Damn, look at this dude. Let's take stock of his minions for a second:
>army of slayers (gray jobbers and uber elite white palace guard also-jobbers)
>changelings
>blonde seductresses
I bet he has a whole menagerie of other creatures he never got a chance to dispatch because he was too busy hitting on Lyssa all day.
>>211434459>What's that Japanese word for women who play hard to get?Christmas cake
>>211435081Jesus that's wallpaper worthy. Shit most of the shots in this movie are.
This thread is kind of sad and pathetic but I've had Krull on my watchlist for a while and your enthusiasm has convinced me to watch it tomorrow night.
Anon these screenshots do make it look kino as fuck and you've inspired me to add it to my watchlist
>>211435231>People fixate too much on the Glaive being a completely impractical weaponThe audience fixated on the Glaive as being what would defeat the Beast, but it turned out not to be what does in a supreme headfake. It's a false Macguffin.
>>211435339This post is kind of rude. That make you many friends? Captain rudepants?
The spider sound effects are perfect.
>>211435339After you watch it and realize it was kino all along we all expect you to come back here and apologize to OP for ever doubting him
>>211435386>>211435425I'll be sure to let you know in the next Krull thread.
Wouldn't be surprised if they built this as an actual set at Pinewood.
>>211435417If you were a kid in the 80's you had seen few things as spoopy as this spider. I was shook by it
It's Lady Macbeth! Another great little character the script doesn't feel the need to overexplain. She has powers, she's stuck in the middle of the spiderweb, that's all you need to know, guy.
>>211435601And she used to romp with the old dude but sold him out for powers or some shit.
>>211435713That spider was super pissed off she let some asshole into his egg sac
>>211435719>Finally! I get to eat your woman!
>Where we're going, we won't need roads.
So many amazing shots in this.
Whoever created the Agro Crag was a Krull fan.
>>211434592This scene and a scene from a TV movie called SOMETHING IS OUT THERE gave me a phobia of creatures with black eyes to this day.
>>211435601I was thinking they could do a prequel about Ynyr and (pre-spider) original Lyssa.
Rell is the ultimate slayer slayer (RIP)
The Beast has this cool house and he's too fucking big to see most of it! Sad.
I miss when they made movies filled with classically trained British actors. They're crushing all the death scenes, and there are several.
I never quite understood the logistics of the Beast's master bedroom. It must be like a TARDIS in there.
>>211433409I miss the days of 80s fantasy/sci-fi sets. It's obviously fake but it feels far more real than a cgi background ever could.
>>211436283>I never quite understood the logistics of the Beast's master bedroomI'd have loved to find out everything about the Beast in his bedroom
>>211436343Shittiest hallway ever, don't stick around.
Chadwyn could've been vaporizing fools with the Glaive this entire journey and he chose to fight with a sword. Motherfucking Chad shit desu.
Even behind the scenes shots of the Beast costume in full, clear view look fantastic.
>>211436487Imagine the roars.
There's a Logan's Run set quality to this and I mean that in a good way.
Revenge is a dish best served fiery hot!
Brave kid. You couldn't shoot this today.
Time to blow up these models!
Sequel where Colwyn and Lyssa's son uses his mastery of fire to seek out the Glaive in the Beast's corpse that's floating somewhere in space when?
>>211431520 (OP)The cyclops dying was rough, but worst was those two poor bastards stuck in the spike room. Slow ass spikes and they couldn't do anything about it but watch their imminent death creep up. Princess was hot as fuck.
>>211436710I recently was watching Beastmaster with the director commentary and they were talking about how much of a bitch it was to film with the tiger and they couldn't have any kids there at the same time, so they would have to position the actors in such a way so when there were shots of the tiger going through the kid was out of focus or a stand-in behind another actor.
The Black Fortress died on its way back to its home planet.
>>211436878Ever since that one episode of Tales From the Crypt I've appreciated how hot Lysette Anthony is.
I don't know how Yates got away with filming Titch with the tiger. That animal must have been doped up like crazy.
Damn what a fun movie. So much to love. Even the weak script is helped along by its brevity. That Horner score is a force. A good score can elevate just about any movie, especially when it's got so many great shots and memorable production design.
Thanks for the thread: great screens, great rundown, great flick!
>>211434592This scene freaked me the fuck out when I watched it as a kid.
>>211437189Of course! If one new person watches Krull I'll have done my job.
Loved watching this back in the 80's. Very true to form High fantasy. I also really liked how they show consequences of actions like the old seer Yineer, going to see the widow, and even though she told him he would die after gaining the knowledge, still had the will to do it and the cyclops who denied his fate to help his friends, meeting a gruesome end. THATS how you tell a story. Everything isn't always sunshine and roses, but you see the humanity, the struggle and the will to overcome.
>>211437453There's a lot more subtlety in this movie than I remember from when I last watched the whole thing a decade ago. Excellent character moments throughout and solid worldbuilding.
>>211437596There really is. Like when the widow still thinks that the guy hates him and it would be pretty just since she...ummm yeah. But hes like, let me show you how I see you, through my own eyes and she turns beautiful and is so overcome by that revelation, she gives him the knowledge and even her life force to delay the spider long enough for him to esacpe. Fuckin no words, ultra kino.
I'll watch Krull over the weekend

>>211431520 (OP)used to watch this show on HBO as a kid at my grandma's when i was over there and i loved it

i loved the cyclops and him seeing his own death
i loved the firemares
i like the insanely cute shota hot boy

>>211440209I'm still waiting for my Krull/Last Starfighter crossover film.
>>211440264could have been a cozy hub world lol
>>211440435I've already got the script written. I just need a studio and 200 milly to make it.

>>211442246>Radio Shackcan you imagine that back then they competed with industry leaders in the computer field? every journalist had to had a pic rel as it ran WordStar (Word equivalent in 80s and 90s) and could also transmit documents over the phone line

>>211432031Does he betray his uniform?
for once OP wasn't a faggot
>>211432262>>211432691Don't forget the awesome Errol Flynn acrobatics Chadwin unleashed on the slayer at the castle
I recall the movie being an interesting concept that just kind of falls flat because of a paper-thin story, two-dimensional characters and things that are sometimes occasionally cool but only by themselves for a brief moment rather than as a whole.
It's certainly a film, and I wasn't disliking it while watching it but it has absolutely no staying power compared to something like Conan.
>>211443793I think OP is right with the score doing a lot of heavy lifting. It really takes you into the "we're on an adventure" feel if you can get into it. Then when it's gone it's "oh yeah besides looking and sounding good this isn't the greatest story ever"
>>211443793>>211443942The script is a bit rushed but it does have some excellent writing, especially for the lines. Like Rel, the Cyclops telling ergo that his actions give him weight, not the length of his name after seeing him save titch from a slayer and Colwyn asking Rel to join them saying "all men need company, and Rel pausing and then saying "yes, all men" acknowledging the respect Colwyn was giving him considering him a man not a monster. Many other good lines throughout.
