I really did not care for it. I'm Jewish, and I found it the epitome of a nonjew attempting to make a movie about the jewish experience and completely missing the mark. The protagonist complains tremendously about being treated with scorn (and is, some of it unfairly) and how much he hates America, but then is a difficult person who is literally a drug addict. The rape scene came out of nowhere and felt contrived. The niece getting over her war trauma, and the architect telling his wife about having been raped both happening off screen in a 3.5 hour movie is totally inexcusable. The director didn't seem to understand what a momentous decision it is for a Jew to leave America and go to Israel, and that this is not a decision that can happen off-screen either. Worst of all though it doesn't explain what Brutalism is and why it's important, so for me as someone who is coming in predisposed against it and modernist art and architecture in general it did absolutely NOTHING to convince me that the architect is some kind of genius. For all the talk in the movie about how his architecture is timeless I felt it was both ugly and of one particular moment in time. The epilogue where they show all the architecture of Venice was quite the contrast, because to me that is timeless.

I guess this aspect is divisive because the implementation is actually very good. AI makes him speak with his voice sounding like a native. If people weren't informed about it , they would have likely complimented the actor on his ability to do so

I just watched it. Think I need to watch it again, but I was underwhelmed.
On paper it should be right up my alley. I love both immigrant stories and stories about artists and addiction, as well as Adrien Brody and Brutalism, but... meh. It sort of felt like someone took all the individual components of a good movie and just sorta smushed them together.
I think I'll watch it again tonight, maybe I just didn't 'get' it the first time.
Also the ending montages was fucking horrible.

It had a good color palette or whatever the fuck but it was so cliche and had so many tropes that people thought it was about a real person because it followed the tired biopic formula so heavily. Also a Jew that survived the holocaust complaining about Guy Pearce and his son merely insulting him a couple of times is not believable and Corbet knew this so he put the rape in but it happens after Laszlo kvetches about how le hard it is to be an immigrant and how racist the evil dutch-anglo man is. Guy Pearce's performance sucked. The black guy served no real purpose.
