>Character walks up to sink and splashes water on their face when they're stressed
So people actually do this or is it just a /tv/ trope?

I only do it when I'm alone and Daydreaming/LARPing because I've seen it in the movies. I also do a "silent scream" to sell it more. I like playing scenes from movies.

> Overcrowded office so you're always around sweaty stinky Indians
> So crowded, men's restroom has a line.
> Waiting in line to take a piss
> All the Indians splash their face after washing their hands, as if that cleans them somehow
> They still stink like rancid shit

I don't splash it on my face and in turn, splash it all over my clothes. I gently cup an amount of water with both hands and bring my face down into it. Not because I'm stressed, but just to wash my face every time I go to the restroom.

i splash my face with water often, and then i stare into my own eyes in a distressed way for half a minute maybe and then punch my reflection so hard it breaks the mirror. i might scream and i thrash some other stuff in the bathroom or an adjacent room too if i feel like it. then i sit on the floor and look at a worn photograph of a dead loved one and sob for a while. might drink vodka straight out the bottle. i do this maybe twice or trice a week usually.

Yeah, I splash a little cold water on my face and neck sometimes at work. It's comforting and invigorating. Especially if it's a rough day.

I do it, I don't "splash" my face tho, I put water in my hands and rub that on my face. Or wet a paper towel and then dab it on my face

Splashing cold water on your face triggers the mammalian dive reflex, which will help to calm you down.
Anonymous
6/14/2025, 3:30:42 PM No.211446535
When the facial nerves detect cold water in mammals it triggers a biological response called the diving reflex, decreasing heart rate, constricting blood vessels and diverting blood to the vital organs. This happens for obvious reasons and in animals like seals this relex is very strong. It can also be calming and reduce anxiety if done while under stress.

I've done it when I've felt tired. I've never been in a situation where I've felt stressed and felt compelled to splash water in my face. I guess it might feel great.
