Women were nonexistent in the actual important, organized roles of knights, kings, soldiers, etc, which only leaves rag-and-tag militia groups like pirates or rebels for semi-believable female representation. That's why, whenever a resistance group is depicted in media, it is ALWAYS led by a woman, without fail. Because you gotta have a woman and where else can you shove them?
