fuck, I love this movie

my dutch grandmother was always a real penny-pincher. Never went out for dinners, wore thrifted clothing, only ever watched movies on cable etc. But one day she called me up and asked if I wanted to go to a movie.

I guess she saw Sean Penn on the Oprah show or something, and thought the premise for the movie sounded interesting. I was 16, agreed to go with her, and it's still my single greatest memory of watching film in my lifetime.

.....i just didn't like it. I don't like sean Penn. I dont like vince vaughn. I dont like eddie vedder. I found it insincere. I obviously didn't hate it as i've watched it 2-3 times. I think his sister's (jena malone's) voice-over was the worst part.
It could have been great.

IIRC there was a cable line between two towers with a passenger basket that you could use to cross the river. It was less than a mile from his location but he did not have a proper map (he had a driving map) so he was apparently unaware of it.
