Blood Meridian
Blood Meridian
md5: 91c47568f3c11ab4962cf250be340d85๐Ÿ”
A film based on the novel Blood Meridian will never work, and this is why.

Films about deliberate incoherence exist - see the "works" of superhack Matthew Barney, for example - but celluloid masturbation for the sake of beating its methamphetamine-injected penis to Oingo Boingo and ejaculating swizzle sauce, can only be done on a small scale. The film must be representative of something intensely-personal to its creator, in order for it to "succeed" - for lack of a better word.

Cormac McCarthy's novels are largely-unfilmable because in a sense they are the opposite of this. They are incoherent tales of masturbatory grandeur, but on a very large scale. No Country For Old Men and The Road - both of which were heavily-flawed - still worked to some extent because the respective directors of the films understood the thinnest amount of cohesion with regard to a "plot" - and I use that term loosely - and worked strongly around that.

Blood Meridian is an altogether different kind of beast. It signifies all the grotesque excesses of Cormac McCarthy's other works, but piles on Grand Guignol-levels of wankery and a pathetic attempt at "introspection" over an enormous, sweeping design that, in the hands of other, ACTUAL authors might have worked - but instead forms an extraordinarily-boring yarn of impossible, incomprehensible excess. Almost as though the novel itself was penned from McCarthy's own ink-tainted semen.

Such an "adaptation" - and I use THAT term laughably - would cost in excess of hundreds of millions of dollars, be six+ hours long, and leave you simultaneously disgusted at its attempts of sophomoric edginess, and yet unrelentingly-confused as to what the creators of the film were actually attempting to signify. It's The Stand, but re-written by an eighth grader with Down's Syndrome, high on meth and smearing himself frequently with Vaseline as he typed, giggled and blew spit-bubbles.

Not necessarily in that order.

Ive been saying this for months in Blood Meridian threads, very pleased to see someone else say this. Suttree is a very relatable character and you could fill it with funny likable black characters. Even though Suttree is his last name I decided recently I'd wanna name my son Suttree. Thats how much I like the book.

Well said, I had a kek reading this. I once read a few pages from Blood Meridian and that told me everything I ever needed to know about Cormac McCarthy.

I truly, deeply detest the "great" American authors from the 20th century. It's all masturbatory, nihilistic, post-modern wankery written by men fundamentally uncomfortable with masculinity.

There's nothing incoherent about his works. You just got filtered and formed a vendetta against an author that momentarily made you doubt your sense of superior intelligence, a view that clearly forms a central pillar of your perceived self worth judging by your decision to write this spiel.

Ah, Blood Meridian. Monsieur, that novel is the sark and chaparral of literature, the filament whereon rode the remuda of highbrow, corraled out of some destitute hacienda upon the arroya, quirting and splurting with main and with pyrolatrous coagulate of lobated grandiloquence. Our eyes rode over the pages, monsieur, of that slatribed azotea like Argonauts of suttee, juzgados of swole, bights and systoles of walleyed and tyrolean and carbolic and tectite and scurvid and querent and creosote and scapular malpais and shellalagh. We scalped, monsieur, the gantlet of its esker and led our naked bodies into the rebozos of its mennonite and siliceous fauna, wallowing in the jasper and the carnelian like Archimandrites, teamsters, combers of cassinette scoria, centroids of holothurian chancre, with pizzles of enfiladed indigo panic grass in the saltbush of our vigas, true commodores of the written page, rebuses, monsieur, we were the mygale spiders too and the devonian and debouched pulque that settled on the frizzen studebakers, listening the wolves howling in the desert while we saw The Judge rise out of a thicket of corbelled arches, whinstone, cairn, cholla, lemurs, femurs, leantos, moonblanched nacre, uncottered fistulas of groaning osnaburg and kelp, isomers of fluepipe and halms awap of griddle, guisado, pelancillo.

Didn't read. The movie could work..they just can't shy away from adapting the violent parts of it. That's literally all there is to it.

There's no story here. McCarthy can be a good story-teller (The Road, No Country) but this was not that. There are no arcs, no developments, nothing learned or gained or resolved.

Im nearly finished the book and its just a bunch of dudes going from town to town getting drunk, murdering the populace, scalping injuns and being sweaty in the desert. What exactly makes this "unfilmable"? Why do people jack this book off like its the darkest thing ever, or put the judge up on this pedestal as the most evil guy in fiction up there with AM? The worst thing hes done so far is justify killing Injuns and randomly killing two dogs (O NO NOT DA HECKIN PUPPERINOS!!) I feel like that scene in South Park where the boys are excited to read Catcher in the Rye because its this banned book thats super hardcore then its just some fag kid whining

a book could be perfect without that but Blood Meridian has plenty to it between characters like Judge, intensive experiences, survival, murder sometimes senseless, any of the philosophical musings, that and just great prose and a very uniquely descriptive world. Personally Suttree is his masterpiece though, that one is all character

Better ending that is actually good: the Kid kills the Judge and becomes the new Judge, then hunts down black Jackson and kills him because that's based and the two anti-racist scenes earlier were gay and cringe.

The father dies and the boy now has to make it on his own with new people. For a story about fatherhood it was a good ending and a complete arc.

In terms of scale, obviously not. The Judge is a single, if borderline paranormal, man. AM is a supercomputer with a physical form that stretches 100s of kilometers and has already destroyed all of humanity before the book even fucking starts.
Being considered among the most evil fictional characters isn't judged by how many people they've killed. It's a matter of how well they're written and the Judge has a fantastically crafted aura to him
