I think it varies, but AVP cannon holds that the xenomorph was a bioweapon the space jockies developed in a war against the yautja.

I think the general disdain for Promethean is that it shoehorned that into a movie Ridley wanted to write about Jesus being an Alien and life started by them. He couldn't get it bankrolled, they wanted Alien,so he shoved it in.

in my headcanon the engineers of prometheus are real, but also different from the big pilot in alien, who is biomechanically part of the ship. its probably a kind of cargo ship for eggs.
also none of the crap about david creating the first xeno is canon, and the planet he nuked wasn't the engineer homeplanet but a shitty seeded one.

Anything with the engineer being connected to humanity and creating humans was incredibly stupid and destroyed everything alien about Alien. The space jockey and xenomorph were interesting and scary specifically BECAUSE they were found way out in the black loneliness of space. If they'd just been here all along and made a map for humans to use to find them, then mystery gone, story is boring and stupid.

Not to mention that there's zero reason to even give a shit about the movie Alien at that point. You'd just be thinking "oh that's an engineer ship, yawn. Oh, that's a facehugger egg, and it's gonna make a chestburster. I already know everything that will happen in this movie." Why is this Weyland Yutani ship seeking out this engineer ship yet keeping it a secret from its crew to the point of getting them all killed? If it were based on Prometheus, then they could all know what's going on just fine, use the android to grab some eggs, shove them in the cargo hold, bring them back and no one dies. Even gets a bonus.

in my opinion prometheus should have had maybe a vague reference to alien at most, but overall stray from the giger xenomorph shit and make it weirder and more existential horror instead. ofcourse thats too hard for hollywood.
the way the engineers communicate or command technology through music, have a language of DNA-tech in the meme-goo, religion, could all be used for kino purposes.
