We see a compassionate man, but one obsessed with truth. If the truth would cause more harm to others than good... then what?

Until Carter lost his mind it was a very interesting theme in the show. The shadow government was morally repugnant beyond imagining, self-appointed and took actions that were as much if not more to elevate their own station than to help mankind. Yet the choice was slavery or certain death and they chose the former. Were they in the wrong?
