Somewhat true. Legolas being such an overpowered chad and Gimli being reduced to a comic relief hurts the tone. Also, they butchered Denethor.

Hear me out: The First Hobbit movie is a better adaptation than Fellowship of the Ring because it didn't have to compromise to make itself a proof of concept film it needed to be to get as many people on board for this trilogy.

>trying to make the movies for Tolkien
I don't know a lot about Tolkien but would he have really been a fan of the fucking kid-friendly/plebeian-friendly lot of little "proto-Marvel quips" they added to the adapted script? I don't even get the impression Tolkien was an elitist or whatever but would he had really liked the "shall I get you a box?" "toss me!" "that still only counts as one!" "this adventure... quest... thing... anyway where are we going lol" bullshit etc. etc.

LOTR absolutely has "proto-Marvel quips"

It's flawed if compared to books, but different mediums so whatever, can't expect the same thing.
It's pretty good compared to most fantasy films out there, however.

Gimli is a much more dignified, well-respected character in the book, although some of his funny moments in the films came from the books (such as his Orc-slaying competition with Legolas, though even that one was altered to his detriment). There's no suggestion Legolas is stronger than Aragorn or Gimli. It is confirms that they heightened this role to accommodate Merry and Pippin's coming of age, Dwarves being crude and all.

Also Merry and Pippin were less of a comic relief in the book. Pippin wasn't stupid so much as he had a tendency to be thoughtless and overly curious. Merry he was a more serious character, he's still more serious in the film, but he is also more carefree and comical.

On the other hand, Aragorn is more unsure about returning to the throne of Gondor, and must be convinced by Elrond to do so.

Frodo is much more of a push-over compared to his book counterpart.

shit bait.
They are not overrated. They're the best fantasy movies, the most consistent trilogy, and overall just great filmsโ€”with strong characters, writing, action, soundtrack, and more.

Yeh, Legolas indeed had some major advantages over even Aragorn and Ganfalf in the book but the movies overplayed them to a ridiculous degree.
For instance passing over Caradhras was not a big deal for Legolas, he barely felt the cold and could slide over the snow. He was the only character left completely unscathed by the attempt.
The Uruk-hai chase in early TT wouldn't have been considered a particularly great feat for elves but it was for Aragorn and Gimli. As opposed to them Legolas never tired of the chase and he's seen being alert when the other two are sleeping.
Same with the first winged Nazgul they saw over Anduin. Everyone is in great distress but Legolas' first reaction was to shoot it down.
Same again with the Paths of the Dead. For the dunedain and gimli, just entering the gate was an enormous test of mettle and will. but to Legolas it meant nothing at all. He later says that he just perceived 'frail ghosts'.
Truly a based character.
