The new one is probably my least favourite of the bunch desu. All the other movies had at least some scenarios that weren't entirely out of the realm of possibility or were situations so common in everyday life that you'd have anxiety worrying about them. My theory is that death can't do anything too obvious. He can't just make a car explode for no reason. There has to be a cause&effect - on a large scale. But he can affect very small things, like a penny falling at just the right moment. It takes complicated planning therefore to enact these death traps.
So when people survive his elaborate death-designs that he's assumedly put a lot of effort into, it both thrills and pisses him off. He's happy that he gets to test his ingenuity in finding new ways to kill these people. But he's pissed that the planning for the old method didn't pay off.
And I think this is somewhat confirmed by Iris' book which shows us that the audience hints we're given are actually part of the rules and theoretically characters in the film can see the same clues.
