Most of the WW2 movies from the 60s and 70s that people still watch today were unique and set themselves apart from the typical movies of their day. Patton was one of those great movies. The vast majority of WW2 movies from that time portrayed the Germans as buffoons or mustache-twirling villains, go watch The Guns of Navarone and tell me that it was sophisticated in its portrayal of German soldiers.

West Germany was an important ally against communism during the cold war so obviously the nazi war crimes were downplayed, after the end of the cold war this wasn't necessary anymore. Also no one really gave a shit about the holocaust until the eighties when that Shoah documentary crap came out

Really, it shouldn't have existed in the first place because the Wehrmacht had a well-established track record of extraordinary cruelty even in the West, but West Germany's reintegration was seen as crucial to Europe's wider stability so it got whitewashed.
