That’s also one of the reasons it falls off at S5, there just aren’t any new meaningful dynamics for him to explore, Lumen and Hannah were ass, Harrison wasn’t sentient yet and Deb was there from the start so there was no novelty there

The idea of Dexter having a friend that he brings into his other life is interesting, but it's a filler-tier thing. Dex having a son, his wife being killed, his sister finding out he kills people and hating herself for helping him, are the only key elements that needed to exist, and would've caused Dexter to unravel enough to the point that he slips up and the FBI would now be after him. So season two happening at the end instead, because realistically after he was able to evade the FBI he shouldn't be brought to justice by anyone except someone who he couldn't bring himself to kill no matter what (Deb or his son).
