There's a billion and one examples of guys who have it all, an easy job, a big home, a hot wife/gf, and/or a job that can easily support an entire family.....
.... but the entire crux of the movie is that they aren't spiritually satisfied despite having it all.
Office Space is a good example of this (though Peter isn't rich), American Beauty, Fight Club. It was a common movie theme back in those days.
And it already seemed like a ridiculously foreign concept by the mid-aughts because everything became so economically difficult, jobs wanted to wring every cent out of our labor, rents and interest rates conspired to take all we have, and we had to fight every day for our literal lives rather than have it all and feel unsatisfied because it doesn't sooth our souls.
The fact that they could focus so deeply on "deep spiritual satisfaction" after being economically comfortable is a sign of how incredibly cushy those days were.
