There's that, and also right now I'm reading the Star Wars Jedi Apprentice series and that also rules. I think it was common for YA authors to consciously add very adult themes and concepts into books aimed at younger teenagers while being fairly safe in the language to slide past the censors.
K.A. Applegate specifically intended to show the effects of war and paranoia on a bunch of child soldiers. Which really helps make the stories feel so much bigger. Like that one moment in one of the earlier books where the kids want to sneak into someone's house and think they can do it by turning into ants and going through an existing tunnel, but things go quickly and horrifically wrong because the colony living in the tunnel see them as outsiders and a threat so start ripping them apart limb from limb. Great stuff. I really need to finish the series.

The initial sequences of Godzilla arriving to and moving through the city, the vibe of New York in the rain, and some of the other elements from the movie really work. Has some character issues but otherwise its a fun watch.

Did you know that tie-in books like OP's picture were such terrible sellers that Random House pulled the plug on all of their Godzilla book projects? Or how the Godzilla '98 Trendmasters toyline was such a disaster that it killed that entire company?

did you know my local blockbuster had a godzilla drawing contest when the movie came out for home video and i entered my killer pencil sketch but the guy working ether said it was only for 'kids' (i was 15) and i said i was a kid at heart and at least let me put the drawing on the wall with teh others to mog them and he agreed it was a great work of art so i did and then i went back and changed my name and age on teh drawing and when i went back to collect my prize (a plush godzilla toy) i found my pencil sketch had been scribbled with crayons by some kid attempting to colour it in and i freaked the fuck out grand autismo style and they ended up calming me by just giving me a different godzilla toy it was so fucking cool one with so many points of articulation and it made sounds and came with a peice of building debris it stood on and i had that thing until my bitch ex wife 'lost' it in my daughetsr toys and gave itaway to a thrift store.
