The reason WWF was able to do this was because it was a privately owned company during the 1990s.

Retired wrestler Stone Cold Steve Austin talks about it on his podcast. He says back in the day, Wrestlers had no more Freedom to be creative and spontaneous. It's how he created his Stone Cold Persona. He just made it up one day because it felt like it suited him best.

But modern wrestlers have at least a dozen WWE writers making scripts for them in advance. And all scripts are checked in advance to make sure it's inoffensive. No more ethnic jokes anymore like when the Rock made fun of Chinese and Mexicans.

I think the reality is wrestling's heyday (like most other TV shows) is over. WWF was fun because of the gimmicks and personalities. Things got a little over the top in the attitude era, but the core of it remained the same. I think wrestling's biggest problem is it became more about the drama than the wrestling. Really all you need are two guys trash talking each other and beating each other up in the ring. Trying to make it about infidelity or anything non-wrestling is a recipe for disaster.
