Don't even get me started on this. 'Sunshine' specifically.

Sunshine should've ended when they finally set off the last detonation and the sparks just started to flit into existence, then immediately cut to black, film over. You don't know for sure if it worked or not - if humanity was saved. It's left to the imagination, which elevates the film.

This would've been actually interesting from a philosophical and narrative standpoint. But they ruined it and made the most boorish, obvious conclusion. I'm not sure if suits got involved here, but I'm tired of films being ruined to cater to a retarded audience. People on the whole are smarter than given credit and would be able to appreciate ambiguous endings where appropriate (imo this being one such occasion).

Sunshine could've been genuinely brilliant - modern sci-fi masterpiece - and they fucked it all up. Idiots.

Considering they sit the script with a SINGLE idea and that idea got cut before they even found a studio to make the movie, I'm always confused the hell they were even trying to pull.
The movie quite literally ends when the bank robbery is stopped. That's what? 40 minutes? 45? The rest is pretty much the editor saying "yo, guys, I can stretch this to like an hour, but that's till not a feature length" so they've improvised the rest of the "plot"

the film ends on a question: "do you think he saw us?" literally, this is referring to the finnish pilot but subtextually this is more of a spiritual question that's about god. right after Jim avoided his executed, he looked up at the sky and saw an airplane flying overhead. the film ends on a shot that has a kind of parallel structure: he once again looks up at the sky with a contemplative look, but this time there is no answer. why not? because he is in hell as picrel suggests, which is typically seen as a separation from god. this all implies that he is spiritually damned
this is the worst condemnation possible

>but I'm tired of films being ruined to cater to a retarded audience
I agree. The reliance on test audiences is baffling and the fact that they will change the entire movie to fit their "tastes". I just saw a movie recently (picrel) that supposedly was butchered and dumbed down because the test audiences didn't get the symbolism in the original cut. It seems likely that the original was butchered because it started off excellent with top notch atmosphere and started to become jumbled around the halfway mark and the tone seemed to change. That was the result I guess of Disney spending millions to "fix" it to cater to test audiences, and all they get is a forgettable film, when the original might have been become a classic.

>The reliance on test audiences is baffling
In reality, test audiences are responsible for saving 9 out 10 movies from being unwatchable piece of shit. You are effectively observing this on survivorship bias basis - the handful of movies that got shafted by test audiences make big splashing waves, but the thousands of the movies that were saved never mention it, because why should anyone be even mentioning this.

It was captivating until the 3rd act. I remember thinking that after seeing it in the theatre. Yeah the premise might not be that believable, but it is able to create suspended disbelief and pull you in and get you to care about the characters pretty effectively.

Anons on /tv/ seem to have forgotten that movies are entertainment. Not some sort of pure realism. Make a premise, then have it play out and see how it goes. If that means "send oil drillers to drill an astreroid" or "let's ride this train to the center of the Earth" then that's what the audience accepts going in and you make scenes based off that. It's just so weird to see them say "ugh so unrealistic to restart the sun, that means it's a bad movie durrr" It was plenty entertaining. And you're right, the idea of the guy with all his skin burned off somehow surviving for years alone of the ship then sneaking aboard unseen and being a slasher villain was beyond what the audience could suspend disbelief for.

Genre shifts are cool though. The hard sci-fi is already interspersed with slightly religious or supernatural themes from the beginning, with the psychologist's increasingly intensifying worship of the sun, Kaneda's last look, the laws of physics breaking, etc. The ending is sort of set up, but it's still a surprising shift.

Sometimes in sci-fi you have to suspend your disbelief for the basic premise. You wouldn't be able to enjoy most of them otherwise. I don't see how time travel or thought-reading or FTL travel or whatever is not comparable. Is Avatar a bad movie because the technology is not realistic, or is it because of other reasons? I don't think the bomb in Sunshine is even that egregious, it's just some futuristic device that makes the plot possible. The specifics of how it works aren't important to the movie.

Never mind your entire counter-argument is a retarded distraction, since Sunshine actually presents itself as serious sci-fi, while making laughable mistakes a high schooler should be able to call bullshit. And Terminator is basically a thriller (T1) or action movie (T2) that uses sci-fi premise as an excuse to tell a story about a killer robot.

Your argument wipes out most of science fiction lol. >To shape the science of the film, Boyle and Garland hired scientific advisers, including NASA employees and astrophysicists.[26] Brian Cox, a professor of particle physics at the University of Manchester, was hired to advise the cast and crew after the director had seen Cox on the science TV series Horizon.[42] Cox gave regular lectures to the film's cast members about solar physics, and also advised the filmmakers to scale down the nuclear device in the film from the mass of the Moon to the size of Manhattan. In the film's backstory, a Q-ball enters and is caught in the Earth's Sun, and begins to eat it away. According to Cox, the Sun would not be dense enough in real life to stop a Q-ball, but filmmakers took creative licence in writing the backstory.[37] Cox noted in the DVD commentary that several inaccuracies were permitted to allow for plot. He also dismissed criticisms of the film by scientists: "Sunshine is not a documentary. It's trying to just, in an hour and forty minutes, get across a feeling of what it's likeโ€”not only to be a scientist, because obviously there's much more in it than that. So, I found it interesting to watch the kind of people that get upset because the gravity is wrong."[43]

Kind of, yes. A premise or the central concept of a story is different from a midpoint turn. For example, people accept an unlikely coincidence being the starting impetus of a plot, but if coincidences just keep happening, people don't find it believable any more. It's easier to suspend the disbelief of the audience in the beginning by presenting a premise, than doing it again in the middle, for example in Sunshine by the bomb starting to suddenly move by itself or something.
It's not realistic, but without the science magic bomb there's no story. Sci-fi stories would be very limited if they had to follow your rules.

And you're still dodging the fact that we KNOW shit like this shouldn't work. It's not speculative. It's not suspension of disbelief due to elements like magic, it's not just a matter of presentation, like Star Wars or Warhammer 40k.

None of those are comparable premises. The sun-resetting science bomb is a pretty simple one, who gives a shit if it wouldn't work in real life? Healing people with Anthrax is just a stupid non sequitur, and you don't need to be an autist like you to not accept that premise.
Of all the problems you could have with the movie, "the bomb wouldn't actually work", and "the guy would actually freeze faster" are just autistic nitpicks. Not using the AI to communicate across the ship is a plothole, yes, but wouldn't ruin the movie for most people. I don't remember what other nitpicks you listed because I'm not scrolling back up for that.

It's fine. You're a brainlet, so you like a movie made for brainlets. You don't have to fuss about this. /tv/ is a movie board. Here you can find people who will recommend you other films that hit the same audience as Sunshine. Legally Blonde, maybe?

Yea I'm stupid because I don't fixate on realism in the premise of sci-fi movies. I wonder if Brian Cox or other scientists also hate the movie because they have 3-digit IQs and that makes them incapable of suspending their disbeliefs for a moment when enjoying movies. You think they would call people stupid for simply accepting the premise? Ironically it's childish behaviour.
I'm pretty autistic too, but not this much.

>hen what the fuck are you talking about?
About putting elements to a movie that are clearly wrong, you fucking retard with pajeet-tier reading comprehension.
I literally gave you examples of equally retarded premises similar to restarting a star with a big bomb. None of them features shit like magic, superpowers, ghosts, etc. Because those are fictional and non-realistic by design. A star is not non-realistic. A bomb is not non-realistic. Thermonuclear reaction is not non-realistic.
Since you're extremely retarded, I'll provide you with a simple example. But there's still a chance you won't be able to figure this out. Danny Boyle made a movie about Nascar races. Except all the racers are actually sitting in canoes and try to paddle through the track to reach the finishing line. It's all played straight. Not a satire. No one points out the racers are in fucking canoes. The director and screenwriter literally thought this is how Nascar races work. Then years pass and some retarded faggot keeps barking like a little bitch each time someone in the internet points out that there are no canoes in Nascar.
I'm thrilled to find out how you'll still manage to misinterpret that.

Ok, so you were just being pedantic about the word "realistic", as if you suddenly couldn't follow the discussion anymore and wanted to get out of the current line where you were calling people who don't accept the premise stupid. I think you know what I meant when I used that word, but maybe not because the autistic mind does work differently.
Your example is as retarded as your previous example about healing people with anthrax, it's just a non sequitur and not comparable at all to a bomb resetting the sun in a sci-fi setting, which is a very generic premise. Yours is just silly. Could make for a trippy movie.
Anyway this discussion devolved into nothing a while back, so I'm done. I still like the movie, despite the idea of a bomb capable of resetting the sun being an unrealistic premise, and I don't think that being able to look past the realism of that premise makes someone stupid. It's just basic suspension of disbelief, it doesn't make you smart to not be capable of it, it makes you autistic and incapable of enjoying many good stories.

No, you absolute fucking retard. I just explained you why. You just cannot grasp it, because for brainlets like you science = magic. And your entire argument boils down to

Yes, in this case the science is magic. It's so that there can be a plot. Most people accept that, and they understand that it's not realistic.
Healing anthrax could be similar, but story-wise it's just a retarded random idea compared to the bomb, and people wouldn't accept it for that reason.
The TV show The Expanse is mostly hard sci-fi, but they have developed unrealistically powerful engines so that the travel times between locations don't take months or years. That's just the premise which makes the plot work. It's slightly less magical-seeming than the bomb in Sunshine, but not that much so.

No. A "healing anthrax" is exactly just as retarded as restarting a star with a bomb. Maybe a bit less, since (in a proper sci-fi setting) someone could come up with a benevolent bacteria strained from the one causing anthrax. Close relatives to Bacillus anthracis (the bacteria causing anthrax) like B. cereus are B. subtilis are already used as probiotics and in industrial applications. So the bigger problem would be still using the name "anthrax", since that's how you call the infection. Realistically, though, the public could buy it and use the phrase "good anthrax" or whatever, just because it's catchy.
Not like you care. All you want to do is show that a retarded movie is actually great, because you like it.
