I think Warner Bros really screwing over Snyder got the ball rolling. People were speculating on Snyder's vision of the movie rather than Whedon's version, so that hype built almost to mythology levels.
Then the movie released and it went from like a 2/10 (Original Cut) to a 3/10 movie (Snyder's Cut). Everyone saw just how shit it was, even with 4 hours of a movie, extra shot footage, and editing changes that Snyder and his crew took advantage of, yet Snyder cultists were satisfied that it was "slightly" better than Whedon's. Now we're stuck with these bumbling retards for a long while, even though Snyder's next movies, Army of the Dead, and Rebel Moon, were utterly fucking terrible and some of the worst movies ever made.

What do they even think is gonna happen? Gal, Ezra, and Jared Leto are basically box office poison, Ray Fisher is probably never going to work with WB again, and Ben probably just won't wanna come back. WB probably won't want to pour millions into a failed universe, and that's not even taking account that even if WB cancelled all of James Gunn's projects the second Superman failed, it's still probably be years before they're even able to do anything significant for JL2.
