Does anyone born before 2000 remember how cool/intriguing it used to be when there was a character who had subtle undertones that they were a closeted homo. Or there would be characters in the story who participated in some innocent cute gender bending?

now when those types of characters get introduced, it makes you roll your eyes because there is a social aspect behind it. it feels as if someone took the reigns and took it in a horrible direction to antagonize the audience. it's not a cute thing anymore.
