The first movie has the great setting of a society that's past the point of no return in decline, but people still lie to themselves and act like they can still make a difference. That kind of setting is greatly underutilized in fiction.
The third movie somehow still works despite the PG-13 rating downgrade. I thought it was very good character work to have Max, a character whose defining moment was losing his family to senseless violence, to immediately forget about his personal grudges once he comes across a hidden enclave a children, and force his way into a role as their guardian.
