Seems like the past 10 years would've been the perfect time to cash in on manchild gaylennial nostalgia. 3D animation has basically peaked a long time ago, so why bother sticking to it so fiercely? They rarely even put 2D stuff on TV.

Same reason you don't see puppets and animatronics anymore, CGI workers aren't as heavily unionized.

3D is faster. Plus all the talent drained away when they basically self-sabotaged their in-house 2D animation to push 3D for investors.

They wouldn't know how to make a quality 2D movie at this point. They're incapable of it.

Even with today's tech? It's not like they hand draw 2d cartoons on tv these days.

Emperor's New Groove was the high point of Disney and the last time I gave a shit about anything they produced.

Princess and the frog was a flop, and that set the cogs in motion.
Princess and the frog was an attempt to get back to 2d in 2009, but by then they were rolling on the golden era of the first 6-7 films of pixar movies that they have all being a hit.
That was the nail in the coffin to say "na dog fuck this".
They DID made an attempt at outsourcing the job: In 2010 they distributed a Ghibli movie, with ghibli on the rise, to try and capture 2d fans again.
Problem was, the movie was Tales of Earthsea.
And that's pretty much the end, after that is a winnie the pooh movie that was another flop, and never went back.
