That's the point.
You wouldn't talk about beating Cthulu. The demon is essentially just a low-tier Cthulu. You CAN beat it but it's so insanely difficult it might as well be impossible.

We would need to know the limit of it's possessor ability.
Can it only possess mammals? Can it only possess animals? Can it possess single celled organisms? Or fungal spores? Or trees? Can it travel through an entire forest by jumping from root to root or from when wind brushes the leaves together?

I’m genuinely confused when I watch movies like this, and it has a rotten tomatoes score of 41%, and it had poor audience reception at the time

It’s a good movie, why did it not get good responses?

Movies are often at the mercy of the time and situation they were released at. There are tons of great films that were shit on for one reason or another initially and then years or even decades later people will realize all the bad press about them was for trivial or stupid shit. They end up being considered "hidden gems" or cult classics. People will often cite authors and works that weren't appreciated in their own time and gained prominence well after they're long dead. Its common

I think many denzel washington movies were so in the zeitgeist that when they came out, people just assumed "oh, another movie with denzel" but as someone who watched most of his movies 30 years later, they're really good. they encompass everything I love about 90s movies. richochet, fallen, devil in a blue dress, the bone collector, and some of the his 2000 ones are just as enjoyable, deja vu, unstoppable, taking of pelham 123, the manchurian candidate, inside man, man on fire, training day. not all of these were rated badly but with something like deja vu, I can see how it back then was easy to disregard but ultimately it holds up as a really nice thing to watch

it's a case of "we didn't know how good we had it"

I saw this movie a long time ago.

Oddly, the only line I remember from it was from John Goodman saying "Someone's playing with my dick...and it ain't me."

I use that line to this day whenever I feel like someone is fucking with me.

Freeman probably has some better movies (seven) but I see them differently. Denzel is the kind of leading man that makes the entire movie into a denzel movie, kind of like paccino. Seven isn't a brad pitt or morgan freeman movie, it's just good and they act in it.

They might've fumbled it but for slightly more understandable reasons. Fallen isn't a perfect classic but it could be the best thing you watch this year if you like 90s stuff and occult thrillers. I also see it as a denzel thing as in him being able to elevate both of those categories. "A 90s thriller? Okay. A 90s denzel thriller? Now we're talking"

Anybody else find it weird when you watch a religious/occult focused thriller/horror movie like this. The main character basically knows for certain their enemy is a demon or evil spirit or something. And for some reason they try to just go at it on their own, maybe do some research in a library or something, and at no point do they do what seems like the obvious thing? Go to church, talk to a priest, ask for a blessing, I know priests don’t really do exorcisms but you can probably find someone who does. It seems worth a try if you’re already fucked and your only plan is to kill yourself anyway

Only parts of this movie I remember disliking is

>demon specifically can’t possess denzel for some vague unexplained reason

Just felt like lazy writing to justify the demon possessing everyone around him to fuck with him instead of going straight for him. Could’ve just wrote it so the demon explained he would prefer to not possess him to make him suffer more or something

It feels especially redundant given the ending, he suddenly can possess denzel. No reasoning given except the vague shit about how his soul is now tainted for… killing the guy the demon possessed, who then tried to shoot denzel to death. Hard to buy that his soul was now tainted by self defence

>the chick saying denzel was LITERALLY some kind of angel from the tomes lol

Just felt incredibly unnecessary. A righteous man fighting against an immortal supernatural evil is interesting enough. No need to imply he’s somehow an angel (an angel with no real powers or anything)
