Soviet kino thread? What are some of your favorites? I guess we can include pre-revolution Russian Empire films from the 1910's, too, though I haven't seen any.

Here's Red Snowball Tree (Кaлинa кpacнaя) a 1974 doomercore movie about a released convict who shacks up with a female pen-pal in a remote Siberian village, only to find that trouble continues to follow him:

It was incredibly popular in the USSR. By some measures, it was the MOST successful Soviet film within the Soviet Union, but it isn't as well-known outside the eastern bloc as other Soviet films for some reason.

Alexander Nevsky. Eisenstein really was a genius and I will be eternally mad that Stalin trashed Ivan the Terrible part III.

Also some guy on youtube is the only way to watch it with a non-shitty score.

The USSR included the Ukrainian SSR, and a lot of acclaimed Soviet films were actually made in Ukraine or by Ukrainian directors. You can't even do an exploration of 'Ukrainian cinema' without the USSR and its film industry.

Fuck that, watch Kidnapping, Caucasian Style (1967), a light, colourful comedy featuring a very cute girl who kind of looks like Juliette Binoche.

There were a lot of Soviet comedies, lighthearted musicals, etc. Another popular one was Carnival Night / Кapнaвaльнaя нoчь, about employees at a government bureau trying to stage a new years' party where things keep going wrong:
