It's a great sci-fi movie.
I don't think a lot of people realize how all the things they complain about culturally have been going on for decades if not forever.

I think it was a brilliant idea of actual speculative science fiction (what happens if you remove death from the human condition, perforce); and that it has excellent themes of eternal change (nietzchean) versus eternal stasis as competing ideologies.
it was ruined in execution by cocaine.
i think that a remake could actually be amazing.

I think it's stuck in the early-70s where on one end you have free-love toting people who by then had become increasingly sexless prudes who while on the surface were against sexual violence were also outwardly attracted to men like Burt Reynolds (the original choice) and Sean Connery who largely played (and especially in Connery's case) were fairly misogynistic non-progressive caricatures.
Honestly I thought it was a coke-fueled masterpiece once too, but the more times I see it the more I think Boorman and Connery were just drunk and mad at hippies.

Fucking Contemporary Sci-Fi fans are the worst.
Star Wars legitimately ruined the genre, it became so popular it reset the concept into being one about spectacle and agreeability.
Really only a few episodes of the Twilight Zone really survive in the common memory from the era of sci-fi as cheap and fun social commentary.

That's because a bulk of TZ's episodes were the exact same plot, further stretched another half-hour in later seasons. If it involves the devil, or time travel / manipulation, or some ham in a suit, you can be sure its suckiness will be presented by that chain smoking dope. Outer Limits will always remain the superior anthology.

This is what I mean by Star Wars fans suck.
A long time ago in a galaxy far far away so you don't have to even take into context George Lucas' extremely heavy handed George Bush commentaries.
