The joke is good enough, but the execution is completely wrong. That's a joke that could work as like a 2 second peppered in joke line, in themiddle of a conversation. It's not something that's funny enough you want to draw attention to it with an entirely dedicated shot and sound effect of her walking away dragging the chair. In the original Naked Gun, they would have a 20 second shot with like 5 throwaway joke lines like that, that wouldn't have any attention drawn to them. The only good joke is the OJ Simpson one. The rest just feel tired and half measured attempts at recycling older bits, but shot in this serious style so the humor does not translate through at all. I get that the juxtaposition of a serious action movie type visual approached contrast with gags is a understandable method of trying to up the irony, but it comes off as sad and disheveled rather than farcical and witty. The original would actually do more with less, making single shots or simple scenes dense with gags and bits, creating an atmosphere ripe for making the audience disarmed enough to enjoy even the quickest of throwaway jokes.

People sucking off the OJ joke are retarded. The joke is just them going ''nuh uh we are not going there'' and breaking the fourth wall. A weak punchline for a joke they did not set up. I just don't buy Liam Neeson in it, I think he's miscast. He doesn't have the look of a police serial detective, nor is he really seemingly able to channel that. For me it's the gory action. I don't remember the old Naked Gun movies or TV show having scenes like slitting a man's throat or ripping off their arms even though it's done in slapstick. Maybe they did, it's been a while since I've watched them, but if they did then I think the 'tone' of the action here is too serious.

Like because they knew we couldn't take a geriatric action star seriously so they leaned into the old-fashioned TV/theatre strong arming. All the action in the old Naked Gun series would've been more akin to the Gorn fight in Star Trek TOS.

Having gore is closer to Monty Python and the Holy Grail tier with the Black Knight fight.

I think the flat visual quality messes with it too. Part of the gag of the old Naked Gun series, like Spaceballs, is that the scenes were shot 'straight', as in faithfully following industry conventions at the time. It looked like how your daytime soaps were shot and scenes were framed just like classic movies, to the degree that if you didn't know it was a parody and just caught a snippet of it in passing you'd be forgiven for thinking it was a real, genuine movie and not parody. And the film quality helped to maintain that facade. For this, it just looks like a generic modern action movie, there's no attempt at a veneer of distinction or class, as such the gags, as well-written and as similar to Naked Gun and Airplane as they are, feels more like the Scary Movie era of parodies than Naked Gun.

All that being said, I still love what I've seen so far. And McFarlane tends to be on the mark with his comedies like Orville and the Ted show, so I think it's a good fit.

I never realized until now how similar Naked Gun and the Austin Powers movies were.

The gags are typical unrestrained Jew humor Leslie Nielsen was a major creative influence on the original Police Suad and Naked Gun movies and it shows.

and it is... ok I guess? Humor isn't the greatest but some jokes land, some none.
What I realized is that either modern film making or Liam make some parts of the movie feel like an actual action movie, and then there's the slapstick humor, which I can't say if it is kino or cringe, because it's just so weird to see.
I lean more into Liam, because I think since he has a lot of movies that look the same, you can post a picture of the trailer and something like idk Taken, and I will not be able to tell you if it's from this trailer or Taken.
