This was the first anime I ever watched outside of like DbZ when I was a kid. All the others I've tried to watch seem to just be shit in comparison. No other shows seem to have the same balance between fantasy and gritty realism.
Is it really the only good anime ever made or what? Everyone kept saying Evangelion but the ending of that show was so bad it was actually painful to watch.

Pretty much. Anime as a genre has extremely poor writing. Half the time the show only exists as coomerbait.

His whole plan was retarded to begin with, it's not only physically impossible to write the names of every criminal out there on your shitty book, its also futile because those are simply the symptoms and not the root cause of what you're trying to eradicate, the people that ought to be targeted operate within the boudaries of legality to begin with, they make the laws you abide by.
Death note is such a weird show, despite its very political premise it barely has any political depth to it.

all he had to do was not kill people already in prison and on tv.

he would have been best off by killing politicians by getting them to admit their crimes on the news and who they benefited, ask other politicians to come forward with their crimes, and then have them commit suicide. then you do the same with the people pulling the politicians strings now that they are named. no way to blame you and you have briefly made society better until new shitty people fill the power vacuum.

Having gone to med school, I can tell you that most smart people are absolutely delusional about their intelligence and think mastering one thing makes them an expert on anything.
Smart people are actually much easier to scam than midwits thanks to their inability to accurately assess their intelligence and their insane egos.

I felt like he went out of character right at the beginning when he tried to murder L on TV. from there it was just a series of weird decisions that only implicated him further all done just for the purpose of pushing the plot forward. When you have to constantly make your characters act illogical just to move the writing along, then that is bad writing.

Unironically yes. His *crucial* mistake was killing the guy who claimed to be "L" on live TV (spoiler: watch the film in order to understand why); he should've just watched it and not done anything at all. After all, killing someone who claims to be investigating HIS alleged murders just because he might be onto him is just straight up evil anyway.

This is what he should've done as soon as he saw the Death Note function for the first time (right after his first kill with it):

>gather the names of *everyone* he chooses to kill in a single mundane notebook
>take about an entire year doing this, maybe more
>do that whole thing where he figures out the entire web of corruption which systemically produces crime itself
>have all of the names assembled
>on a certain date chosen for reasons
>write all of those names into the Death Note in one single session with instructions to somehow communicate a message to the public before they all die
>none of this half-stepping shit just frolicking every day, serious sit down and plan shit
>inb4 just as planned

I just didn't get the sense that this was his character at the very beginning, but I suppose you're right that being an impulsive idiot quickly comes to define him as a character. so in that sense trying to kill L was very much in character in retrospect. it just really caught me off guard that he tried to do that when it first happened.

Also, if he was a real genius, he would've used the Death Note to incidentally produce particular patterns he could trade advantageously in the market (and just have really rich people send all of their money to his anonymous untraceable just as planned swiss bank account before dying); once he had several percent of all the world's wealth, he could've used this financial leverage and instrumentalized further Death Note victims in order to build a utopia for the future of mankind.

Plus he was a schizo from the start, its like those people who torture pedophiles or something, Do the pedos deserve it? Maybe, But will those people if given the chance do the exact same thing on innocents? Absolutely. Its just a different type of psychopath that does evil on supposed evil doers to make themselves feel different

Ultimately, he failed to exploit the virtually limitless power of the Death Note to its fullest. Imagine if he had written down the names of 99% of the population over the course of a year, each programmed death preceded by instructions to undertake a particular task as part of the ultimate design of which Light/Kira was architect. He could've programmed billions of humans to build an entire space program and travel all the way to Tabby's Star in order to kill whomever built that dyson sphere around it. HFY!

There's also the fact that Death Note is written by boomers as a reaction to the Aum Shinrikyo attack. Basically saying the gen xers and millennials who grew up post bubble and were upset that despite doing everything right (studying hard, going to the best universities, etc.) they did not have the same financial and professional opportunities of the bubble generation. Basically the author is saying "oh you people who want things to be better? Yeah you are literally Aum Shinrikyo!" It's a real strength of the animu that it softened those messages and made the story more interpretable from different angles to the point Death Note still invites discussion 2 decades later.

It all happens pretty fast, too. It's not really drawn out much. He figures it is likely Light early on, but doesn't have proof and works towards that. Light gets L's name, but can't write it down because at that point L has almost enough evidence and makes it known that if he were to die, it would prove Light's guilt. So Light does a scheme to "prove" his own innocence, at least in the eyes of the rest of the taskforce. And then once he pulls that off, he kills L. I feel like most of these kinds of critiques come from people who only watched half the episodes decades ago on Toonami.

Death Note's animu has some of the best directing for both animu and live action. The show goes a mile a minute with high tension despite most scenes just being people talking to each other, which makes it an easy watch. And the high concept lends itself to discussion on multiple levels. One of a kind story.

It's a light novel, prequel to the Death note. L has to catch a serial killer called BB.

He also wanted to know how the fuck Light was doing it. If a guy show up with inexplicable telepathic murder powers, you could just kill him and end it, but the smarter thing to do would be to try to figure out the underlying mechanisms to prevent it from ever happening in the future. For all L knew, Light was going to be the first of many.

I never saw this but obviously know parts of what happens, how does Light fuck up having a book that kills whoever he wants? Even if they find some trend or link to the deaths how are they gonna find him out of the 90 million people in Japan.
Does he just kill a bunch of people he knows who have publicly wronged him or something?

>how does Light fuck up having a book that kills whoever he wants?
Light is exceedingly easy to manipulate into acting on impulse and pride, he wanted people to know someone was out there but wasn't prepared for the blowback to his murder spree
>Even if they find some trend or link to the deaths how are they gonna find him out of the 90 million people in Japan.
Light, as Kira was killing inmates and criminals who the details of their cases were only known to those within the police department itself which was a smoking gun that narrowed it down.

he was just a regular teenager that liked to think he was smarter than everyone else. thats part of the appeal and tradgey of the series.

You give a regular, well meaning person ultimate power and watch them destroy themselves.

its questionable whether or not the shikigami were also fucking with his mind the whole time. The problem with this series is, once itbecame popular the government basically freaked out and theres lots of rumors that the author was forced to change his story and make light retarded/comically evil because the japanese government didnt want to deal withcopy cat vigilantes murdering people who deserved to be killed.

The difference is LeLouch had actually noble goals but had to do some morally sketchy shit to accomplish it, also he wanted a better world for his sister to live in and he never lost sight of that goal.

Light got drunk on the power of the death note and only pretended to have lofty goals

If the death note was real and Light did what he did IRL he would still be 100% unstoppable. His mistake was not realizing that he's in an anime and that an autistic genius savant with infinite wealth existed and wanted to solve the mystery for fun.

If Light operated in the same way nowadays, he gets caught for sure. There's even more beeg data tools and ways to track search history and patterns. Only a computer wizard or someone extremely good at anonymization would be able to get away with what he did. Now someone only going after big public figures? Yeah they'd get away with it.

They had actual trust in their institutions unlike westerners, especially americans, nowadays. Crime rate was low, tax money got filtered into public works and services people cared about, they weren't sending in endless immigrants, etc. etc. So the conception of stopping the bad in the world by going after public figures in the government and/or corporations wouldn't be the first thing that comes to mind for a japanese person in the year 2005. This is reflected in the story of Death Note - Light kills individual criminals while the people earnestly trying to stop his killings are the ones who hold institutional power: police and other governmental organizations.
