We don't know because he didn't do a fucking thing. Then at the end he says this is what will probably happen so I win haha. Roll credits.

He played the regents like a bunch of retards because he knew Ishido's bias would be the end of him, and it was. He was so desperate to impeach Toranaga that he turned on anyone who disagreed with him so he could gather more power, the same thing he accused Toranaga of doing.

>was he an honorable man?
No. None of them were honorable because they all were just following strict codes they've grown up with to live and die by regardless if it was good or not for all involved. Basically robots killing and killing themselves over silly shit just because they were supposed to.

Bushido was a WWII invention by "muh ancestors" Jap nationalists. The samurai did not have a formal code of honor and were backstabbing bastards. The only "honor" was the mafia-like obedience to their clan and superiors.

That's historically accurate. Tokugawa Ieyasu assumed a dominant position in the regency and had the best land and the heir in his custody, and he knew the other regents would attempt to le game of thrones him and each other, so he just sat there and watched them squabble for power and form a coalition against him while pissing off everyone they couldn't buy out or bring in to their conspiracy with empty promises of power. By not doing anything at all, he ensured their attempt to take power was a fart in the wind, ending with a battle where most of their army defected thanks to promises that they would be treated leniently.

See, it all sounds really interesting in concept. The strategy of not doing anything but sit on your ass while you have all these layers of traditions and bureaucracy keeping your enemies from just outright killing you, and making the situation more dire as you keep surviving more and more days by sacrificing your son and best friend thus driving the regents apart as they don't get what they want, is really a solid strategy. However, as it translates in the show it just makes it such a boring slog. You literally have 10 episodes, where 4 to 8 is just watching paint dry as you have to wait with the characters for Toranaga's plan to finally bear fruit.

What do you get in that timeframe? Mariko's bwc adventure, Anjin unable to understand Toranaga's keikaku (the audience as well because we aren't allowed to know, so it just seems like Toranaga is doing jackshit the whole time) and Ishido and the regents sitting on their ass because they don't just say fuck it and go kill Toranaga. It just doesn't make for a very engaging watch.

on my first watch I thought it was all going to lead up to an epic battle with the cannon warfare and everything being used to ensure victory but they were only used for one episode, the show was all about how much of a chessmaster Toranaga was but it was an underwhelming finish. still a good show but left a lot of loose ends

I mean this is exactly how the book ends too, he just thinks forward to how he will win the great battle. I think there's an epilogue that says "he won and ishido got it in the ass. The end."

>the audience as well because we aren't allowed to know, so it just seems like Toranaga is doing jackshit the whole time
what are you on about? the premise of the show is obvious from the start. Anjin literally says during the title card something like
>in this land of politeness and saving face, what kind of man becomes powerful?
it's clearly a big brain mastermind type of show. And every interaction of Toranaga with the council made it more obvious

As a white man I disagree. They're second only to white women for me and culturally they're less abrasive. Unless they went to a western university in which case they're often more insufferable than white women.
