It would be if Godzilla vs Destoroyah didn't exist.

Anno's sequel idea was more of a throwback to the goofy monster fights from the 70s and Toho decided to take a hard pass on it.

I'm sorry mate, people watching in the distance as Godzilla wrecks buildings that might or might not have people in it, no matter how flashy, just can't match the feeling of having likeable characters in the middle of it and seeing people get stepped on right behind them to sell the scale of what they're running from. Godzilla's Rampage in shin is fantastic visually, that's plain to see. It has lots of unique abilities to it and it's got some real power behind it that jumps at the screen. On a purely visual note, it's great and that's why Shin is still one of the better solo godzilla movies. But character wise? Excitement wise? Just plain story wise? You can't have a one note blank faced prime minister be the only one in danger and expect to reach the same level as watching people you saw struggle and grow all movie desperately try to outrun the carnage unfolding behind it.

It's like 2014 forgetting to make us actually give a shit about the main lead before throwing Godzilla at him. Make us care about what's happening IN the carnage too!

Millenia onto Reiwa era Godzilla has been nothing but anthologies and one shots. They need to just make a continuity and stick with it.

Minus One is finally getting a direct Toho sequel, and as >>211567687 said the Monsterverse is what's tackling the Showa/Heisei throwback "era" style right now with monster-of-the-week fights but consistent main kaiju.

Yeah, but I have mixed feelings about the legendary series. I'm a lifelong Godzilla fan, I gotta say I like Kong in that series a lot better. Legendary Godzilla has like no charisma at all. He's just tard rage

Ironically, it's supposedly Toho that wants that and the American directors have had to "sneak" any bits of characterization in subtly.
I've seen speculation that it might genuinely still be that Toho is traumatized from '98 and wants to limit what Legendary can do with the character just to be safe.

godzillas movement in some scenes looks the worst it ever has, dunno why thats “retarded”, poor special effects are distracting. I like Shin but it’s true. when godzilla barely moves it looks great though

Overall bad film with good moments. As soon as Godzilla goes to sleep so does the audience. At least it isn't Shin Ultraman which is effectively the same film but with no moments

>As soon as Godzilla goes to sleep so does the audience.
I've said this before and got angry replies. The movie reaaaally slows down, while watching it I was wondering if the CGI budget ran out because most of the cool shit is frontloaded to the first half.

ok im exaggerating, raids again has the worst movement. and its not utterly awful or anything, the cgi just isnt up to par with the legendary movies or minus one, and it goes from looking really great to pretty bad which is jarring. minus one goes from amazing to alright, and the legendary movies always look good

for me it's (in no particular order)
1. GMK
2. Terror of Mechagozdilla
3. Minus One
4. Final Wars
5. Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah
honorable mentions to all the other mechagoji flicks. you can't go wrong with the guy..

I still don't understand what the fuck were they thinking. It's already a happy ending because he doesn't kamikaze himself and returns to his daughter. You are actively dismissing the sacrifice your supposed metaphor for her dying in an atomic fucking explosion was supposed to present.

It's a definition of soul by both presenting the story as a play, bowing out all the characters and showcase Zatoichi dejectedly walking away from celebration and people he just saved because at the core of his character is always deep loathing for himself, where he doesn't allow himself to get close to people thinking that he only brings misfortune and calamity.
All in a tap dance.
I know you are just trying to be spiteful, lad.
