What's the deal with americans and cults? It doesn't seem to happen that much in other countries, are you guys really so easy to manipulate by anyone with a modicum of charisma? You'd have to be borderline retarded to let yourself get fucked and give up your money and possessions just because some creep tells you that you're special

There has never been any such thing as a religion, in the sense of some true value system. There have only ever been cults that stuck around. Religions are just old cults, and cults are just new religions. They are all of them equally false, and they are all of them equally bereft of value. The christian, the muslim is every bit the sucker, every bit the dupe that the eckankar huuer, the scientologist is. They are all of them equally stupid in their false need to belong to some sort of human community which is always based on some stupid lie.

Marxism is universal almost everywhere else in the world and it pulls every cult lever and every religious lever. It also causes you to make every excuse and deflection and even support extreme subcults far more than even members of the major religions support cults based on their religion.
Lastly it overtly suppresses your natural capacity self-examination by substituting class war thought terminating cliches and realpolitik conspiracy templates for all general instances where you might ever blame or critique yourself or your in groups (except sometimes race and gender depending on yours)
You stopped developing unique new cults and delusions because you reneged on the premise of individual thought as a whole.
Same exact reason the UK stopped leading the world in new patents, and I bet you'd find correlation in the timeframe.

Unlike so many other countries, America does not have a state religion. There is no Papacy, Church of England, Russian Orthodox, Judaism, Shia Islam, Sunni Islam etc. Separation of Church and state is enshrined in the constitution. In theory, this should be a great thing. There is no dominant and stifling state religion, there is no repression of minority religions.
In practice, America has become a free market for religions, which has led to all kinds of competition and 'innovation' to produce the most viral, addictive and infectious strains and variants of religion.

All religions are 'cults', but when I was growing up, I don't think the adults really believed it anymore. It was more just a set of cultural traditions with everyone just going through the motions. No one was being cut off from their family, or co-erced into sex with religious leaders.

Will Scientology ever catch up to Mormonism? Is there any currently niche cult with the potential to overtake them both?

Given the high levels of income inequality in American society, it is not surprising that religion plays a major role in public life. ... A country with a distribution of income that increasingly resembles that of a developing country is going to have politics akin to one, too. ... [A]s Wal-Mart transforms heartland downtowns into ghost towns, jobs flow overseas, imports pour in, and much of industrial and agricultural America wither away under conditions of long term exchange rate overvaluation and chronically insufficient effective demand, then it should come as no surprise if large numbers of people begin longing for saviors not of this world.

There are cult offshoots of every religion. The People's Temple existing doesn't mean Christianity is a cult. Fundamentalist communes don't magically make LDS a cult.

The offshoots are often closer to the version of Mormonism as originally practiced in the days of Joseph Smith and Brigham Young.
