The sky was the limit by the end of Force Awakens, a creator could've come in and done just about anything with the trilogy and take it anywhere they wanted, and Rian Johnson decided to subvert everyone's expectations by taking it on a nosedive to brown town. Which lowkey saved Star Wars by killing any chance of a proper new trilogy, allowing for us all to know peace and be spared from when it would inevitably shit the bed again on a fifth or sixth trilogy, but that was an unintended effect
