Run out of fuel, "hmm shall we look for supplies in any of the nearby houses? Or just grab a nearby car and keep driving?" Nope, instant group suicide attempt. Runs out of ammo, walks like 5ft from the car, and the entire US military is just, THERE.

It's so stupid it feels like a fucking sketch. How do you not hear multiple fucking TANKS driving straight at you? Why would you just instantly give up? Book ending made more sense, this was just darabont trying so hard for a forced downer ending it loops back round to comedy

>Why would you just instantly give up?
Almost like the movie was trying to say something about herd pressure and what happens when you choose to lose all hope, diametrically opposite of what happened in the novel but 30 times more effective than "muh God there is name of a city in static we should THE END"
Almost like her passing by him with her kids alive, highlights his terrible mistake of giving up. Apparently even Mist is too complicated for autists "literally meing" themselves into the narrative.

From a practical standpoint I think he (Darabond) intended us to feel like they were in the car for a long time, but since it was the last few moments of the movie its tough to convey visually. I agree in the in the movie it feels like the murder happens 15 mins after they escape the store, when they actually spent multiple hours in the car trying to reach safety. Only to see GIANT monsters and fog that obscures them. You also have to remember what he's (main character) seen up until this point. They couldn't even get to a car in the parking lot safely. The only thing they know for certain is in the mist is an absolutely brutal death, likely only 20ft away. These have been truly torturous deaths at the hands of the creatures too. I'd certainly rather shoot my son than have him end up an incubator like the MPs. From a film making standpoint, this>>211596638

Ah the themes make up for an ending that belongs in a happy tree friends episode, got ya.

An ambiguous ending is better than what we got, this is akin to the Thing ending with them both shooting themselves. Only to find out they're both not infected, then the rescue team arrives seconds after they're dead.

>Ah the themes make up for an ending
Did you miss the entire second act of the movie and them going insane in the supermarket, attributing the mist to God's punishment and that everyone is dead is just a question of who dies first?
Nah, that's totally not part of it.
Forget that the woman leaves in the beginning of the movie too, begging people to help her, but they see her venture as hopeless despite her clearly being right.
Yes, it's only the ending that brings up people losing hope and doing something fucking crazy or cruel.
Again, it is fucking incredible that something as basic as Mist's ending is dismissed by "nah I wouldn't do that, lmao goofy aah shit lol"
Keep scrolling the phone, bud.

If you want to do that in a way that makes sense, don't have all of THIS just feet from the characters. Just have them give up and then slowly zoom out on their car, or show the army weeks later finding them. Not seconds after, and literally right next to them.

That's just it, the film conveys the utter impotence of a single man, the insignificance of his dreams, the frailty of his family (kills own child, wife dies, his literal family tree collapses in a storm). All of his efforts to save the people he loves was for naught. But oh, the army will save us don't worry.

I just watched the movie Sneakers. In the final minutes of the movie, they hand over a powerful hacking device to the government to get their payment. Then, in the last 15 seconds, they reveal that they actually kept the device, and a news anchor says the Republican Party just lost all their money and no one knows where it's gone. As soon as that sentence is done, he says "in other news, Greenpeace and the United Negro College Fund just received record profits". Then the movie ends. The movie talks about hacking the government constantly, and what they could do if they erased all currency or all records of property. But the Hollywood writers couldn't really imagine any usage of such a device beyond "fuck republicans".

They just spent the last minutes negotiating with the NSA about all the money and rewards and cleared criminal records they were gonna get for handing over this doomsday level threat over to them. Then as they give it they go "btw it's just junk, don't actually look into it" and James Earl Jones goes OK. Then it cuts to a news anchor gleefully talking about how Republicans are too stupid to find their own money. So I guess the government was just OK with giving them all that stuff for nothing while the gang became the biggest threat to America and rigged the election. It just falls apart at the end, everyone acts like idiots except for the hero

It's not the lack of nihilism that makes it dumb, it's the series of events that had to take place for the ending to happen. It's absurd.

Explain. It makes complete sense for the character. And it's not even ambiguous in any way, they narrate why he did this.

I have no problem with the killer's motives, to me 99% of the movie is perfect, but despite it being very grounded in reality, they pulled a super natural element at the last second which took me completely out of it. You could argue that it was supposed to be metaphorical or whatever, but having those last shots of pure fantasy felt really bad.

>but despite it being very grounded in reality
Sincerely, what are you talking about? His sense of smell is unambiguously supernatural, and he has no smell of his own. The whole point and tragedy of his character is that he is clearly not human. Who is obsessed with the idea of putting 'love,' which he associates with beauty, into a bottle?
For Christ's sake, he sits in a cave for 7 years (I don't remember if it's said in the movie, but in the book it is so). This entire story is full of fantastic and supernatural elements.
You realize that covering beautiful women in fat will not produce a love perfume too?
Where did you see realism?
>You could argue that it was supposed to be metaphorical
It's not. It's very literal. He made the father of a child he murdered proclaim that he loves him.
He looks at this and ponders how strong this aroma must be to produce this emotion. Except he can't feel any of it; he can never actually understand what he created. He made a perfume that forces people to love, but he himself can never love anyone.
That's why he dips himself in it and returns to the gutter from which he came from.
It's an incredible ending.

A dream fake-out is always bad, but this one is especially agonizing because they were clearly alluding to it, and it would have been incredibly ironic for this character, who toyed with everyone throughout the story, to not see danger under his nose. I heard it's because they wanted sequels, but still.

It's worth remembering that they exhaustively tested him to determine what would lead him down the path he went on. Also his brother was in on it. They knew the guy inside out. That's the point of the 'game'- to push someone to their limits until they rediscover themselves and appreciate life anew. It's a basically just a cool metaphor for 'what doesn't kill you makes you stronger', so naturally he can't die. Great movie.
