No. It was a long term investment. Kind of the opposite of most adaptations or established IP sequels (Sequel Star Wars trilogy, Transformers, Jurassic World) That having said, The Dark Knight is overrated and most people pretend to like it because ledger heroed

It was a strong film that had a lot of baggage from the Batman films that immediately preceded it. Not a box office champ but not a complete failure.
However, strong positive reactions and DVD sale/rental made it a solid success.
