It's kind of like H.P Lovecraft who wrote letters like he was an 18th century aristocrat but all his stories were published in these flaming dogshit magazine

hes still fondly remembered and read though so whats your point? hell Melville died poor and depressed that everyone hated his writing and literally couldnt even make a living writing and died being some office clerk. lovecraft and REH made a living purely from writing and were liked during their time and after

lots a famous writers had no fame or money at all during their time and would have loved just to get constant work in a dime magazine

Pulp magazines were the only ones publishing the kind of stories Lovecraft was writing, and he loved horror so itโ€™s not like he acted like he was above it.

lovecraft was a weirdo autist raised by a single mother after his father was sent to an insane asylum
so he ended up a bit eccentric

Lee actually liked the book Dracula, he (rightfully) doesn't give a shit if some capeshit is being adaption raped but Dracula meant something to him.

He bitched about how they kept blackmailing him emotionally into starring in their dogshit by telling him that they'd have to fire all the crewmembers he'd befriended over years of starring in dogshit flicks if he didn't.

This, is not that he hated the movies but producers always find a way to fuck over the cast and crew. From what people tell the guy was always a good sport.

Unless you were a landed british Aristocrat, you could not get a straight-up horror or sci-fi story published outside of those magazines back then. Gatekeeping was real, and a part of me wishes it never stopped, seeing the dogshit we have to contend with nowadays. I don't think there is a single meritorious writer alive in the world today. And I mean that.
